Moving large tanks

I'm getting pretty serious about ordering a new 8' tank roughly 300g. The one thing that is holding me back though is moving it from the tank maker's to my house. Sure I could get a bunch of buddies together and we could probably move it alright, but it would be a thirty mile drive in the back of my truck. Even though it will probably cost a lot, part of me just wants to just hire some movers and not worry about it. Any thoughts on this anyone?

I agree with the U-Haul and a bunch of buds to move it. Just a good reason to buy some beer for your friends!!!

Id probably cost you a few hundred dollars to have professional movers move it. If you can absorb that, I would go that route, so youre not liable. If that seems like a bit too much (like it is to me) Id get all my buddies, and a bunch of beer and pizza. Make sure to drink and eat after though. Dont want tipsy buddies, or slippery greasy hands =)

I would think all of your buddies would be the best plan. Unless it is on a flat hard surface where you could use a cart of some kind. I have heard of people using Refrigerator 2 wheelers, or you could just use wood dowels to roll it.

A lot of moving companies won't touch it, just like they won't move pool tables.

You and a bunch of buddies can move it easily enough. Are you getting glass or acrylic? That will make a HUGE difference.

thanks for the ideas guys

tbittner, its gonna be glass, I'm not sure how much weight that'll end up being

I'd suggest renting the suction cups 8" in diameter.
If I remember right the company that makes them is Woods Powr-grip, do a seach on them they will save you alot of hassle.

I just helped a buddy move a 300 gal tank (8ft) last weekend. just loaded it in a truck. took 5 guys drove it 20 miles POURING rain. couldnt see 2 feet in front of you on the highway. unloaded at his house. everything worked out fine. its alot less harder then you think. by the time we got there there was about 2 inches of water in the tank that we has to syphon on first but other then that it was a breeze. i dont find feel you would need to go with suction cups and all that, but if your worried abut spend the little extra as a precuation becuase id rather spend the $20 on a suction cup the drop my $900+ tank.

My tank is only a 215g but it took four of us to move it. What I did was rented a van from UHaul, that cost $62 dollar plus gas. I had rented it doing a week day and during the day, so all of my friends were at work and It had to be returned by 5pm. I drove past Home Depot and picked up three laborers(drywall guys to be exact) and offered them $25 a piece to help me bring it in the house. We got it in the house safe and all was well. So it cost me $25 for the gas, $61 to rent the van from U-Haul and $75 to the helpers.

I like the idea of getting help from HD guys; especially for those whose buddies are school boys or computer geeks who don't have any idea how the gym looks like.
