Moving - New water?

I will be moving this weekend and have different stories on the water. Can I make all new water for the tank with no ill effects? Do I have to take all 100+ gallons with me? Its only a 20-30 mile move, just would rather not have to transport all my water.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Colin I would recommend trying to transfer as much water as you can. IME if you don't transfer any old water and only make new water, you will likely experience a small cycle. Can you keep maybe 75 gallons of the old? Then it would just be like doing a water change.

I would like to transfer as little as possible, without having an ill effects on the tank. I have just heard both sides of this story. Some say you can make all new water and be fine, while others say you must use ~70% or more of the old water to keep everything in check.

It would be easy to pump water out of the tank into containers in a truck (garbage cans), and then pump back out into the tank.

Is it possible for someone to hold your more delicate stuff for a couple of weeks?

Do you have a sand bed?

As Leif said even if it all goes smooth you still might have a cycle.

I once set up a 20g using water, live rock, and live sand from my then two year old reef and still had a nitrate spike.

I say ~30% old water should be ok. With my recent move, I used about 50% old..but all this was just the water that I used to transport the rock, corals, and fish.

I have a 6" sandbed. This tank has only been setup for ~3 weeks.

I have someone holding my fish for me and will have my corals in a separate 30g tank. The only problem with the 30g is that I do not have any lighting for it.

Pumping it out of the tank into garbage cans would not be an issue. Pumping it in to the tank at the other place on the other hand, would be quite the issue. Its about 300 feet from the parking lot to the front door.

i gave a 60 gallon vat with a little giant plumbed to it. you can borrow it if you want. but its a long drive to get it.

When I moved my 120, I only used about 20% new water and had no issues at all.

This weekend. I am just moving to Evans. If you still need it, hang on to it, I'm not concerned about it going anywhere.

Steve has that 60gal white container he took out of his basement. I'm sure he would let you use it. It's a standup container so there is minimal space. I think he is using it as we speak to set up his 60 gal Red Sea.

When I recently upgraded (30 gal to ~90 gal) i used only 10 gallons of the old water and did not experience a cycle. I did have all new rock cycled though, so that probably helped with the transition quite a bit. I also tossed the old sand and used new, but with your sand only being 3 weeks old, I don't see it beeing a problem.

+1 When I switched a long time ago (from 46 bow to 40 breeder) , I used 5 or less gallons and had no issues at all...

Fwiw, I have 320# of fully cured rock in the system.

I would be sure to keep your rock submerged. The longer it is out of the water the more die off you will have.

Yeah, I have a bunch of rubbermaid totes to take the rock in.

I want to get it back to you here before the weekend. I don't think I need it as I haven't seen any monti eating nudis in my tank the last week. When is a good time to get it to you? When I was trying to use the suction cups to secure the heater to the side of the tank the clip broke that holds the cups to the heater. I am sorry about that , I can pay you some cash or get you a six pack?
