Moving Tank

Hi guys

I need a little bit of suggestion. Sorry I haven't been much on the thread lately... kind of busy with studying for my dental exam. Anyways, I'm moving apartments soon and I'm concerned about moving my tank. The thing about it is it won't be an immediate move... I have a 3 days in between my current place to my new place. My question is how should I move my tank. I know to save some water and I plan to set up a 10g to stash my corals at a friends place... but as far as the sand... should I toss or wash it out? The rocks...should I put a heater in the water or just plunk in water. Plus, I kind of wanted to kill off any unwanted critters I've accumulated. Any advice would be great. Thanks a lot.

Jay

at the very least wash out your sand....

keep the LR in water with a powerhead....

what "critters" did you want to kill?

I have these root like structures that are spring out of my rocks. Out of nowhere...

btw, bebo, I've been following your tank thread... and I must say absolutely stunning. =)

sorry, anyways.. yeah... it's weird.

if I were to dunk the rocks in freshwater. would I start a cycle over again if I were to add them back in?

Rock is heavy - duhh... ;) So keep that in mind as you have it with water (also heavy) and PH. I use Ice Chests to move mine as they help moderate temp swings we get in the summer. Also sometimes I use a small PH and others times I've just taken a small cup and about every hour or so dumped water over the rocks a few times.

Sand, If you do reuse - rinse well. Hair algae has been know to plague those who reuse sand after a move.

Good Luck

Yes! Great deal of die off would happen. And the liverock wouldnt be live anymore. Maybe in some deep recesses of the rock where the fresh water didnt immediately get to it, but for the most part FW will strip it of anything usefull.

Thanks guys! I was afraid no one could help me...

Would sitting the rocks in cold water kill off crap? Mainly my roots that are growing...?

Going crazy! I'm moving the tank tomorrow. Draining it and everything... I won't be able to set it back up for about 3 days... Wish me luck. Hopefully nothing dies...

good luck, jay. i am moving my tank as well on saturday. stupid davis leases... thankfully i will be tearing it down and setting it back up on the same day. also i don't have sps (besides a monti cap) so everything is a little more forgiving.

anyway, good luck to you!

Thanks Brooke. Good luck to you too!

I'm still up cleaning the place... and its almost 3am. You're lucky with same day. Don't you just love this time of year... =)

Sad day in my life

Sad day in my life

I don't know if I can do this anymore..I lost everything in my tank. :( I've been feeling real down about this... Everything I started with is gone...except for rocks and sand. Last night I finally moved into my new apartment and the transfer didn't go well. I didn't really have a tank up for a couple of days because I was in transit between apartments...that with yesterday hot weather and the stress everything took... I lost it all...Potters Angel, Yellow Coris Wrasse, Algae Blenny, Maxima Clam, Cleaner shrimp...all my sps except one or two pieces...I don't know... just don't know if I can bounce back..... :(

hang in there Jay. I'll get you some drags to get you started back up when you are ready.

Wow - a couple of days??? with the heat highs like we've been having? OUCH! Surely this was not foreseen and/or intentional?

Jay, so sorry for your loss and I've heard that this club can be very nice in helping you recover. Keep with it if you can - but as a college student - I understand. You can always come back to the hobby when your life stables out (if that ever happens???)

oh jay i am so sorry... the weekend was brutally hot. even being able to break down and set back up in the same day i lost my cleaner shrimp and a betta from a little fw tank. :( let me know if there is anything i can do to help you get back on your feet. i would be glad to help you.

when your ready for some coral i can give you a couple things hammer, shrooms and whatever else i can find.

thanks again

I am SO SORRY for your loss!!! Last month I went for a new SPS tank and had to put my corals into a holding tank. I lost every SPS I had spent over a year collecting. I had Tim's Pink Lemonade, Karl's candlelight and Oregon Tort, Elias, Fire engine Monti, Reverse sunset ECT ECT... As bad as it hurt to lose it all, my new tank has about 6 new SPS corals and is making me happy I didn't pack it up and quit! I don't have much any more but would be happy to give you frags of what I do have. Best of luck!

Thank You Everyone

I was real bummed out the past couple of days... after checking this post and seeing so many people offering support...made my day. I cannot say how appreciative I am.

Right now, my tank has just running water.... maybe I might get back in. I'm not sure yet... for now, I will surf around the forums and try to offer my two cents.... again thank you all.

When I read this post I just wanted to cry...
I know your pain, I lost everything in my tank last summer.

With MARS support you can recover.
This is simply a tempory set back, or the option to take the tank in a new direction.
I don't have any SPSs but I can kick down some Xeina.
