moving to a bigger tank

I am getting a 75 gallon tank this weekend and wasn't sure how to approach my transfer of my current stock in my 42 to my 75. I will be adding new sand to the 75 and was wonder if I have to wait for it to cycle or if it will be established right away since my current tank is several years old? None of the substrate in the 42 will be transfered.

IMO unless you are going to add enough cured lr you might need to wait for it to cycle. It might help if you take some of your old sand, a cup or two, and add it to your new sand. This will "seed" the new sand with some of the beneficial bacteria that you need.

Will you be adding more rock? Cured, uncured or dry base? That will answer the question in regards to your cycle.

Just transferring what you have into a new tank may cause a small spike, but not a true cycle if you do everything right:)

I have roughly 50-60lbs of live rock and will be adding some base rock as well. Would that be enough to seed or should I just throw some live sand in there as well. I would prefer not to transfer other substrate as it is crushed coral.:(

The rock alone will be fine IMO. Just rinse the dry rock really well.

Thanks for all the replies! I' pretty excited for the transfer as this will be my biggest tank thus far. I will be picking it up from newschool tomorrow in the morning and hopefully will be up and ready to go on sunday if all goes well.
