MP40 or Tunze 6105?

in a test study that i have seen on here comparing pumps output according to brand tunze always over estimated what they actually pushed out besides the size and they are ugly vortech are small and less noticable

I have run both and prefer the Tunze because of more directional flow and the length of my tank. As for the Tunze being ugly, I find them both about the same, ugly on the inside or ugly on the outside. Depends on where you want the ugly to be located.

I've just read too many times on too many forums and reviews about the noise Vortechs can make.

That's funny bayoupr - "depends on where you want the ugly." I guess with Vortechs, a cube might resemble Princess Leia?

Not saying Vortechs aren't great - they are. I just like the quiet.

i have the tunze and like them if you talk to tunze about flow they say a gph to rate them, but thats not how tunze rates their pumps its about distance and some other that i can't remember. good cust. service too i have no vortech exp. my decision to go with tunze was ease of hookup and more adjustability with the rotating heads i would be very upset with a vortech right now my flow is very hard to get right i want a lot of flow but i don't want a lot where my clams are. i can barely do that now

Not less noticeable when they are stuck to the side of your tank. Where I would need to run 2 Vortechs on my 120 would put them smack in the middle of 2 viewing panes, one of them being a direction I see my tank from half the time.

Ahhh yes, the flow study. Tunze addressed it with a voltage jump and wider housing to accomodate the increased flow so the numbers stated are accurate. Even before the voltage increase, the Tunze moved my tanks far more than the Vortech ever did. It was a huge difference when I ran a Tunze 6105 after a week of breaking in a Vortech....it dislodged tons of detritus stuck within the rocks.

I have been debating the same thing for my 65g. I just got an Apex 2 weeks ago, so the cost of the Tunze is attractive. The 6095 looks like Tunze's attempt to recreate vortech-like flow....

My question is can you really get "random" flow with a single Tunze and an Apex? All of the code that I see looks like "run at 70% for 3 min, then at 30% for 2, repeat" or go from 30% to 100% over 10 min" is it possible to create a random mode like reef crest or lagoon? Maybe I am just not understanding the code, but I am usually good at understanding code and how/ what it is doing.

My primary goal is to get all of the organic matter out of the rocks and off the sand bed and down into my filter sock... Is the best way to do this with a single power head wave or random flow or with a specifically designed series of pulses (ala Nutrient export mode)?

Ultimately i keep getting pulled back to the Vortech's "one pump, random flow, less crud in your tank" philosophy. Is this truly something that can only be done by a single vortech, and not a single Tunze, or am i just a victim of marketing?

With the Apex you cannot get truly random flow. the Tunze 7096 offers more randomized flow and the Profilux offers full random flow.

I had much better luck moving detritus off rocks with a 6105 than an MP40.

Were you using a single 6105?

What controler/ mode did you find helped move detritus from the rocks?

At the time yes a single 6105, I had not decided on whether or not I was going with tunze or vortech at that point. Now I run them at about 60% power steady while I wait for a controller to randomize them. I use 2 on my 120. But comparing the effects of a single 6105 and a single Vortech at 100%, there was a huge difference in the flow and that was with the original Tunze without the recent voltage jump increase. If the flow test doe were correct, Tunzes much lower flow than the Tunze still moved the tank far more, and it was not aggressive flow either where a coral at the receiveing end would be harmed.

I just sold my 3 MP40WES pumps and put in 3 6105 controlled from my profilux, the vortechs worked well though had to replace 2 wet ends in 3 months of usage (I sold the pumps at 14months old), Im liking the new tunze for the fact i can adjust the direction of the pump so can modify the flow pattern to suite my tanks scape, they are much much quieter than the MP40.

I like both pumps, they work really well flow wise, but prefer tunze due to the fact I can point them where i like to get the best flow pattern for my corals
