No one pump is the best, each has pro's and con's, it all depends on what you're trying to do. to combine them is the best option to get full advantages of each other.
I wonder if this really tells us anything useful. Put a 100 or 2lbs of rock in, move the pumps from here to there. All depends on how you have your tank set up. Either way you can't go wrong.
That video is a classic. They made a video to show that their pumps are better in response to the pump study then in the end redesigned their line to be more like the "competitor".
I love my vortechs. Started with 1, now I have 5 mp40w/es and 2 mp60wes. I try not to think about how much that actually cost... It is easier to do it over time.
I would do the 2 mp40 pumps on your tank for starters and see what that gets you. You should not have problems running them at 100% if they are placed properly. Sugar fine sand can be problematic because the undertow is so strong it pulls the sand up the walls. You can see it in this video on the edges. I don't really care and neither do the inhabitants. Check out the flow on my system with just a couple of the vortechs. That is 1mp40 on the right, 1 on the left, and a mp60 on the left. None of the pumps were working hard and I am pretty sure the mp60 was set to about 30%. Not a dead spot in the tank but my rock is on racks and are not touching the walls so much. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1cg8gkR_1w
Join the club . What do you have to lose? Order from somewhere with a good return policy like marine depot and if you are not happy send them back. Most LFS will also sell them for MAP so check locally first. Always good to buy local if you can get away with it.
I was thinking about the MP60 for a minute because one MP60 would cost less than getting 2 MP40s and it would also be more flow. However, isn't it the usual recommendation to go with 2 smaller powerheads instead of just 1 big one? Does your 1 MP60 enough to cover your entire tank? It's interesting that you are suggesting it and I want to know more about it.
It provides a TON of flow at half speed in my tank plus there are less parts on the MP60 that have to be replaced as opposed to the MP60. IMO I would never buy another pump other than a MP60 again. Once you have one you will understand why I say that, the pump is a absolute beast. No matter what you decide you will not be disappointed with the functions and simplicity to the MP pumps
