mp40w best practices

I took the leap and purchased one of these bad boys. Wow! What a pump. I initially set it to Reef Crest mode at 100%. It's amazing to watch the flow on my sandbed go towards the pump. Is there a preferred mode that everyone is using? I also don't understand the purpose of night mode? It's not like the ocean slows down at night.

The purpose of "Night Mode" is to give the pump a "rest" in effort to preserve the wet side and cool down the dry side.

People seem to be fans of Reef Crest mode (yellow) However, I think it is highly dependant on your particular rock work.

IMHO, the simpler the better.

Does the MP40w driver make the pump get hot? My MP20 driver doesn't even get the pump warm on 100% Reefcrest 24/7...

I agree that night mode is not needed, IMO. Like you stated there is no break time on the natural reef. Full bore 24/7.

Actually that is not true, currents and tides on a natural reef is determine by the Lunar cycle and by the seasons (sun cycle).

Some of us with controllers like the Profilux have built in Lunar cycle modes with zip codes. Just enter the zip code you want the Simulator to simulate and it does it.

Right now we are hoping Tim at EcoTech Marine ( put pressure on him, tell him :) ) listens to us and gives us external control over the mp40w.

Imagine having the lunar cycle determine your flow (with min and max setting) , plus with random storms to stir up the tank now and then.

What if we could sync the pump with the aquarium lights and have random storms cause not only increased/random flow but have the lighting flicker/dim just like it does in nature. Now that would be cool!

Profilux can do this now, they are ready for the mp40w they have the driver done.

Tim needs to just update the mp40w driver and we have a go.
GO here and put pressure on him. :D

If you read his post on the matter, he hint as just a software change on their part is needed.

I use Reef Crest with two pumps facing each other in antisync. I tried the other combinations but Reef Crest provided the best flow for my situation.
