MSX vs Octopus

I've read on this forum that the two are the same or similar skimmers but I'm getting confused by the model names. Is Octopus Extreme the same product as Reef Octopus NWB-200 & MSX 200? Also Is the pinwheel impeller bettter than the mesh wheel impeller? IS $250 a good price? Thanks, Jim

The Extreme series uses the Sicce PSK-2500 pump as does the MSX200. The MSX line offers a mesh wheel impeller along with the stock pinwheel impeller.

The NWB-200 uses a less desirable and less efficient pinwheel Octo pump but has a great looking skimmer body, in my opinion.

Mesh may/will draw more air but there is more maintenance. The mesh wears down and needs to be replaced every few months.

The current fad is the Sicce pump with the purple pinwheel impeller from ATB. Claim to perform like mesh but last because it is a pinwheel.

Hope this helps.

jimnrose, in my personal experience I would save the money and not add the PPW... Mine sheared 4 pins right off in less than a month of use... And also the clacking on start up seemed to last longer and longer everytime I unplugged the unit... And lastly,

The white wheel is the stock Sicce wheel. The purple one is the ATB small purple wheel.

whoops since that didn't work lets try this link

JRechcygl, I'll stick with the white pinwheel. I cehcked out the link and it was helpful. I've been building a reef tank set-up for about a year now (very slowly) and the bigest complaint seems to be selecting and adjusting a reliable & quiet protein skimmer. I'm still building the lighting system and then the RO/DI installation. Maybe I'll wait another few weeks before purchasing the skimmer. Thanks, Jim

the pinwheel that comes with the msx 200 is nicer than with the octopus if i remember right. i pull close to 28-30 scfh with my stock pinwheel in my msx skimmer.
