Multifasciatus x Venustus

Hi All,

If I recall correctly I believe that there was a multifasciatus x venustus hybrid floating around somewhere out there, once upon a time.

I have a multibarred in my 120 now, that is eating regularly [frozen, NLS pellets], completely normal behavior, very comfortable, and is approaching his 6 month anniversary in my care. In my opinion a success.

I love dwarf angels, I would like to add another to the tank, however, I am cognizant of the fact that my multibarred is quite a docile fish and that most other dwarfs will probably bully him to death.

This got my thinking about the multi x venustus hybrid. If there was or is a pair out there, the fish must be remotely compatible together. Am I crazy for thinking about finding a small venustus to add to my tank? Is there any reasonable chance they will pair up ? Would a 2" venustus do the trick (I have a feeling anything smaller has absolutely no chance at survival). The other fish in the tank are relatively docile, the most aggressive would be lyretail athias.

Thanks,

Adam

Scott Michael had a pic of a multi/venustus cross in his angelfish book but I've never seen one in person. I would think they might be compatable in the same tank regardless if they pair up or not. I have had pretty good luck in keeping multiple angels, especially the mellower species and I think this mix might be doable.

Great, that sounds positive. If you don't mind me asking, what are some other dwarfs that you would consider docile? Goldens? Argi?

Thanks,

HI Adam. I've got a trio of Multibars ive had for a year now that exibit some spawning behavior. I Added a Venustus maybe 6 months ago that continues to thrive. However, It took me 7 venustus to finally be able to keep one alive. That is with dedicated QT and some experience. This is a very difficult fish and the best choice is a DD Venustus.

Anyway, they get along great and there is some pre-spawning chasing going on between the venustus and soem of the multibars, however they are far from a pair. My point is that they can exist together and are amazing to watch. It is definitly possible for them to pair up but that will take time. Your best bet is to QT the Venustus as well as all new arrivals, and maintain pristine water condition and excellent feeding.

ON a multibar X Venustus... I believe there is only one in captivity in the world and that is in Japan and that was the last one seen in many years. This is what Copps has told me anyway!!! But if someone finds one, Hit me up! I'll pay for it!!!

Great, glad to hear you have them together as well. Whether or not they pair is not as important to me, as being able to keep them together in the same tank.

I am hoping that getting the multibarred to eat (took months), was a stepping stone to a venustus. Unfortunately I am in Canada and cannot order DD fish, I would love to have that option. It looks like I will just keep my eyes peeled for a relatively healthy one and go for it if one becomes available.

Thanks.

the cross has got to be my fav fish. I have a multibar which im going to have to get rid off as i dont think he will be SPS safe when i upgrade, he is in my softy tank at the moment and ate all my zoas, always picks on my gorgonian, kenya tree, etc. He lives with a potter angel fine but when i added a golden angel they wouldnt let him out from behind 1 rock so he died.

Did you add the potters and multi at the same time?

My multi is in a predominantly sps reef. He loves picking at two corals. My green slimer and some brown palys that hitchhiked on a maricultured acro. I swear he only eats mucus from the acro, I have never seen damage or missing polyps. The palys are a different story, he picks on them enough that they wont open anymore.

ataller,

Just added a (Multibar 2.5 inches) and a (Golden 1.5 inches) to my 150 gallon that has a 3.5 Venustus that has been in there for about a year and a half. After about a day or so of the Venutus showing and a little nipping they get along great, will even swim around the tank together. The Venustus will occaisonally show it's dominance with a sideways look, to which the Multibar will just turn sideways a little showing submission, just normal pecking order stuff.

Adding the Multibar and the Golden at the same time was good as it spread out any hostility, and now the pecking order is defined without any real aggression between the angels. Couldn't be happier these are my favorite three angels, so lucky I can keep them all together in a peaceful situation.

Excluding unreasonably rare fish, you have my ideal trio. I would love to see some pictures. I think I am going to attempt the same my self.

Thanks.

My Venustus is very passive, but eats like a pig -- started eating right away (( got it from Diver's Den )). It is currently sharing the tank with a Coral Beauty and was with a Golden too.

Here is the fish in question and man what an amazing fish!!!!

Simply obtaining a 2 in would not do the trick if you want them to pair. If you want them to pair you have to be sure that one of the fish is either a juvi or a female. Considering the shyness of the multifasciata I wouldn't personally try it unless I could find a juvi venusta.

I have no experience with either of these fish, but if they consider each other similar enough for spawning, then it's plausible that two males might be intolerant of each other in the same tank.

I am not dead set on having a pair, I just didn't want them to kill each other. If they do pair up great. I mentioned a 2" venustus, at that size, I assumed it was still a juvi and therefore still sexually immature. Is 2" too big already?

It would no longer be a juvi, but you could get lucky and get a female. :D Ryan is right it's extremely unlikely you'd find a juvi.
