Multiple gigantea..

Hi, will there be any problems getting Gigentea to be side by side or touching each other.. I have a large blue one now, thinking of getting a purple one or green one as my lfs might have stock..

No that should not be an issue. Infact, one of the reefers I know has had them side by side for a couple years now still

One concern is if a new one may bring in pathogens that might kill the established one, which has happened.

That said, I keep two in a 120 but they are not in contact.

Im a huge proponent of this! I have first hand experience with newly aquired nems getting healthy established nems "sick".

How should I prevent it? If the gigantea is at the lfs for a week or more, it should be safe right?

And it should be normal for the gigantea to shrink when the light go dimmer right? It is opened up very large in the day but once my light dim to evening mode, it starts to shrink...

It is normal for the gigantea to reduce in size during the night.. Its not the same "shrinking" as when they are extremely upset..

You can quarantine the anemone for a couple of weeks to ensure it is healthy. If you can put it on hold at the LFS for a week or so you can observe its health as well.. Although the latter is not as full proof.

Nope. Giganteas have a VERY poor survival rate after shipping, and bacterial infection may be the cause (or part of the cause). So many transporting giganteas will possibly acquire bacteria, and they can take weeks to establish themselves and rid themselves of excessive bacteria. So no, a week means nothing. A couple of months would mean a lot, IMO.

There really is no known way to prevent this possibility. I wouldn't try to add a third to my system for this reason.

Oh okay, it is disturbing when I see it shrink soooo small and not as fluffy as in the morning...The LFS dont reserve stocks for customer even regulars..

I guess I have to take a risk on this...

Oh, this blue one is not a established one... I bought it last weekend... So this weekend I am think of getting the purple which I saw last weekend together with the blue one...

OK, well recognize that the success rate with either alone is low, so adding a second into the mix may make the situation even less likely to succeed.

They do get rather large. If you want "more anemone", and if your is beautiful, just feed him. He won't split but will get much bigger.
There is risk in adding a new anemone, unless like some of us, you keep multiple systems, then you can quarantine them. A significant number of long time anemone keepers who keep multiple anemones, will quarantine their new anemone in a separate system.

I do have a separate system but the lighting is insufficient as it is a quarantine system.. nothing inside at the moment.. and it is barebottom too.. I am very scared of removing Anemone from the tank esp established ones..lol. need a long glove.. I got stung by this blue one because i was lazy and use a normal plastic glove.

I wonder, Can you treat with doxycycline as done with H. Mags? This should help to prevent the spread of infection, but I do not recall it being done with Gigs.

This is interesting.. I used to have a few magnifica, but crash when I added another one.. all starts having problems..

The utility of antibiotics with new giganteas is not yet clear. There are a few threads where folks have tried, and in at least one case I recall it did not succeed long term.

Folks should also realize that any given antibiotic does not kill all types of bacteria.
