One concern is if a new one may bring in pathogens that might kill the established one, which has happened.
That said, I keep two in a 120 but they are not in contact.
It is normal for the gigantea to reduce in size during the night.. Its not the same "shrinking" as when they are extremely upset..
You can quarantine the anemone for a couple of weeks to ensure it is healthy. If you can put it on hold at the LFS for a week or so you can observe its health as well.. Although the latter is not as full proof.
How should I prevent it? If the gigantea is at the lfs for a week or more, it should be safe right?
Nope. Giganteas have a VERY poor survival rate after shipping, and bacterial infection may be the cause (or part of the cause). So many transporting giganteas will possibly acquire bacteria, and they can take weeks to establish themselves and rid themselves of excessive bacteria. So no, a week means nothing. A couple of months would mean a lot, IMO.
There really is no known way to prevent this possibility. I wouldn't try to add a third to my system for this reason.
OK, well recognize that the success rate with either alone is low, so adding a second into the mix may make the situation even less likely to succeed.
I wonder, Can you treat with doxycycline as done with H. Mags? This should help to prevent the spread of infection, but I do not recall it being done with Gigs.
