I am getting my 90 g tank set back up with a 40g sump. sump only has about 15 g in it. I have a 250 watt Eheim Jager, and would like to purchase another. Do i get a smaller wattage, and set it to a lower temp?

I have two 300w heaters on full blast hooked up to my Apex and will trip at 79.2 deg

I have two heaters both the same size and both set to the same temp. One is simply backup to the other. Should one go out the temp won't change.

More often a catastrophic heater failure is from an over temp situation.

Set the heaters a few deg above what you keep. My heaters are at 81deg and are hooked to a ranco temp controller.

Having excess heater is dangerous.
Having the thermostats cranked all the way is dangerous.
Relying on one thermostat is dangerous.

Use the proper amount of heat divided into multiple heaters, set their thermostats slightly above the desired tank temp as a backup, and use a reliable temp controller.

Always have a glass thermometer to confirm your probes. It's not if but when an electronic device will fail.

I have two 200 watt eheim heaters that are turned to 79'F. They are hooked to my neptune system which shuts off the heaters when the temp is over 78'F, and turns on the heaters when the temp is below 77'F.

The heaters back each other up, and the neptune prevents over heating by heater failure.

BTW, I had a fluval heater blow up while i was making water for a water change.. I came back in the room and smelled smoke and fouled the water up.. had to throw out all the water . Would have been very bad if it was in my tank.
