Multiple yellow tangs?

xtlosx

Just Reefin'
So I only have a single yellow tang in my 150 (60x24x24) but have read they do well in groups (3+). I would add another two if I did decide to add more is my guess..

What's the general thought about multiple yellow tangs. Any experiences from the group?

Hit or miss, adding them all at once is best. The one that is already housed there can be more territorial to the other two. Another tip is to have tons of rock work for them to hide.
You will know within 3/4 days if you have succeeded, feed a lot through out the day for the first week.

Yea, he's been here since December, so probably well established in terms of territory.. Whenever new fish are\were added, he doesn't even bat an eye.. Our Powder Blue was a real mean fish, which is now gone, so the tank has calmed down 10 fold..

Yellow Tangs aside, any thoughts on a reasonably good room mate for our Yellow tang in this size tank?

Naso Tang, Salfin, Hippo Tang would be my suggestions, or a bristletooth type tang like a tomini.

Naso gets to big for that tank, a sailfin is in the same family. You could try a bristle tooth tang. How about the swallowtail angels or others in that family?

We actually looked at a female bellus angel... I had to return her because our powder blue wouldn't let her be... bossed her until she swam right into my hand and was brought back... The yellow tang never even cared about her in the least, he's rather mellow.

I would not recommend it, a group of smalls in a large system is fine but adding to an established yt in a small tank is a bad idea.

I have been thinking about adding 3 yellow tangs to my 180g at the same time. First I'd QT them all together in a 55g separated by egg crate to see if they tolerated each other without physical contact. I'm still nervous about it though, not sure I want to try it.

Based on my experience it can be done but I think you are most likely to be successful if they were all added at the same time. To the OP...if you are buying the new YTs from a LFS you could ask if it was possible to trade the established tang for a new one. Another option is to move the existing YT to the QT tank with the new ones when they arrive so they all will be in new territory until they are added back to the display. I would also suggest you rearrange the rockwork prior to adding them back to the display
