Mushrooms - Good or bad for tank ?

I just started a 55g FOWLR ... but the LR came with little shrooms!

Can I see some tank pics with lots of shrooms? Will they be colorful in low light settings too?Is there anyone here who has a mushroom explosion and ...yet likes it?

But tell me :
Is there ANY negative downside of too many mushrooms ? I mean chemically , toxins , unwanted life that shrooms might harbor? etc Will they be good or bad to the LR, fish etc?

Mushrooms are fine. They shouldn't harm anything in your tank. If you decide to add sps later on in the future you might want to run carbon.

Oh and you really can't hurt LR, it is a rock with living bacteria on it. lol

carbon sucks out particulates in the water, making it clearer and cleaner. you should have some in the filter that you have, whether its a hang on back filter or canister filter.. you change it out every 4-6 weeks.
 
Carbon will bind organic compounds in the water which are commonly released by many types of corals. Corals use this as a mini chemical warfare. If you keep softies and sps, lps together then some of the compounds released by say mushrooms will inhibit growth and coloration of say sps. Also these organic compounds will tend to cause a slight yellowing of the water, so running carbon will tend to give you clearer water
 
Mushrooms grow very quickly. They can and will grow over and kill Sps corals. here is a picture of my latest headache. I wish i never put them in.

+1 on never wishing you put them in. I had a tank that was completely over-run with mushrooms. They are impossible to kill once established. Its like paying for majanos;)
 
Every tank is different. For me xenia and palys grows like crazy and mushrooms are very manageable. Just get mushrooms you really like (metallic green, metallic red, exotic colors). Also you may want to avoid some of the larger predatory mushrooms (elephant ear, etc.) because they can get 6" across!! I had to take two out because they got too large.

Or just go with yumas and ricordias. They are moderately slow growing, fetch a good resale for frags and come in awesome colors! And their shrooms too!
 
If its a FOWLR tank then I don't see why you would want to avoid any mushrooms. Just let em grow and see what happens, with only shrooms I am sure you will like it. They are usually fine in lower light settings.
 
Hi All,

Can I see more pics of tanks run-over with invasive corals...xenia,kenya,anthelia,mushrooms etc...
Are brown buttons invasive too?
Will mushrooms kill leathers and other softies ?

6 inches is a fairly small Amplexidiscus fenestrafer. Mine was 16inches when I moved it to a less central location in my tank, and was over 12inches when I removed it from the tank.

Amplexidiscus are fish eaters, I havent lost any fish to mine but it does happen.

My B.buttons are dying since my angel is pecking them, will they rot and pollute water?

Also will Anthelia drop branches all the time and spread 'em in the flow?
 
I'm definitely the odd man out on this thread. Can't tell you how many mushroom colonies I've purchased during the past two years, only to have them dissipate/melt. I've tried all of the varieties available on the internet, I've moved them up and down in my reef, increased and decreased water flow and lighting, etc. Water parameters seem to be ok although nitrates are running high right now because of reaquaculturing and new fish additions, and calcium a bit low. Have installed an auto top-off with calcium and upgraded filtration to improve/maintain water clarity. Given my efforts to get mushrooms to flourish, it's pretty discouraging to read so many posts about how easy they are to care for and posts from others trying to get rid of them! Sure would like to know what I've been doing wrong. Tips and suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks much.

Tank:120 gal DAS
Reef: Approx 130 lbs
Corals leather colonies, mushroom colonies, open-brain (new), zoanthid colony, encrusted monty (new), two rics (tiny)
Fish: 2 wrasses, a jawfish, watchman, foxface, flameback pygmy angel, flame hawk, coral beauty, yellow tip damsel, 2 tiny false percs, sailfin tang
Other: large cleaner shrimp, large coral banded shrimp, several crabs and snails
 
What other hardy softies are out there that I can add? Pls name unique names ...eg: Toad stool leather and not just "leather":)

so far i havent had any of these problems but my tank is only a few months old im hoping if it gets over run its with something sweet like acans! lol
