Aloha all, The Hawaii Legislature is considering to pass a bill that will limit aquarium fish collection in Hawaii to 20 fish per collector per person with a maximum of 5 yellow tangs per day. The bill also will put a no take cap on angels, butterflies, boxfish, puffers, eels and many other species. The passage of this bill will essentially shut down the tropical fish industry in Hawaii which will include the transhipped items from Christmas Island and Marshall Islands. Please forward this to everyone in the industry because if we don't stop this bill, next year, yellow tangs may wholesale at $100 each.

Let's try this :

Regarding Senate Bill 3225 SB3225

Everyone including all businesses, employees, divers, parents, kids, brothers and sisters, friends, and everyone involved in this industry -

JAN. 28-29th FROM EARLY IN THE MORNING TO LATE AFTERNOON, CALL SEN. CLAYTON HEE'S OFFICE AT 808-586-7330 AND WHEN ASKED BY HIS OFFICE STAFF - LEAVE YOUR FULL NAME - ( FIRST AND LAST NAME ), AND PHONE NUMBER, AND VOICE YOUR OPPOSITION TO SB3225. IF WE CAN GET 500+ PHONE CALLS INTO HIS OFFICE, WE CAN SHOW THERE IS VERY STRONG OPPOSITION TO THIS BILL . IT'S POSSIBLE THAT HE MIGHT SHELVE THIS BILL. WE NEED TO TIE UP HIS PHONE WITH OUR CALLS. THEN TOMORROW NIGHT, FAX SENATOR HEE YOUR OPPOSITION TO THIS BILL ALSO. ( FAX NUMBER 808-586-7334 ) THIS WAY, WHEN HIS STAFF COMES IN ON TUESDAY MORNING, THERE WILL BE FAXES ALL OVER HIS OFFICE FLOOR.

WE NEED TO OVERWHELM HIM WITH CALLS AND FAXES VOICING OPPOSITION TO THIS BILL.

No offense but this thread is ridiculous...I'm not talking about the bill either.

Who cares if they cost 100 dollars at wholesale or 200 at retail...our hobby is wiping them to extinction in the wild...

I can see why though, your in Kansas, not many diving spots up there to see much...maybe a few caves?

Anyway, the odds of them shelving anything this serious of an issue is highly unlikely. The United States is pushing for mariculture and aquaculture more than anything right now, as are many other countries where its becoming increasing difficult to acquire permits to collect and export.

One day, we won't have wild caught specimens in our aquariums....either they will be wiped out totally, or there will be heavy restrictions on them.

I'm not a tree humper by any means, but I do live on the coast, have dived before...and would love to see our hobby live...but at least let it live on without destroying what we are trying to replicate.

Peanut,
Hate to say it but the previous two posters are right on. I live in Florida and am an avid diver. I would much rather see the high price in the stores than have our reefs depleted and dying. They are well balanced eco systems and if we remove only a portion of one species it throws off the balance. Besides I see way too many people who will buy a fish they are not ready for or have no ability to keep in captivity when it is only $20. Maybe if the price is $50-$200 people will think before buying.

Exactly lobster, maybe the prices of fish taken directly from the ocean should be that expensive, that way more people would try aqua culturing and have where perfecting aqua culturing is worth the investment.
