my red mustang has been prego for about 2 weeks now...he looks like he is going to burst....how long are they usually pregant b4 they give birth???he is swimming upside down ... don't know why but he is.....he is a non-stop swimmer now...lmk thanks

Gestation is approximately 14 days... could be a couple of days longer.
Is it possible that this male has air in his pouch rather than a pregnancy? Swimming upside down and inability to navigate to a hitch are signs of air in the pouch. Is he able to swim down easily?

It can navagate to a hitch fine.. and can control swimming fine... it just swims upside down occasionally.. and rubs against rocks... its stomach is huge..and is growing.. so it is definately pregnant..

how often is occasionally?

my male could navigate just fine, and hitch just fine... but swam upside down and the pouch DID get bigger when he had bubbles in it.

sorry, I'm still suspicious. I don't know the length of thier pregnancy though. Wink says 2 weeks, SOOO

the EASY way to tell. grab ahold of him, and move him around-tilt him upright, then downwards facing. if it moves a bit, or is clear looking really badly, then I'd say bubbles. if its darker colored (which after 2 weeks it should be) and it doesn't 'move' hes probably preggo.

or you can gently tease open the pouch: the babies will be fine if theres nothing.

Here are some pics of the two seahorses civicss1 and I have that look preg...maybe these will help... click on gallery.. on my post..

IMO- looks like bubbles, not preggo. at 2 weeks, it would be RIGHT before the due date, and he'd be a TON bigger than that. think, 2-3 times the size, and it would be full-not bumpy. Thats the perfect picture of what mine looked like when he had his. seriously, I couldn't have taken a better picture of it.

its _really_ easy to do the pouch evacuation. takes about 2 minutes.

grab him firmly in your hand, let his tail wrap around your pinky, and have his chest in your thumb/first or middle finger. take the afore-mentioned bobby pin with a plastic end, or something similarily NOT SHARP and rounded to open it up with.

it takes a few minutes for him to relax... mine liked to just be gently stroked on the side and it calmed him down.

aim him at about a 45* angle, under the water, so his belly is up and his pouch opening is at the top, and gently push on one side of the hole, gently opening it.

it scared the crap outta me when the first bubble came out. its not big, but it FEELS and LOOKS so big. I jumped, but you may not. try to gently move the bubles up to the opening, and keep trying till no more come out.

and if some white cloudy stuff comes out a little with the bubbles-thats sperm ;)

heres a link to how to do it better than my short explination, with pictures (but that male doesn't have it in the pictures, he was for demonstrative purposes only)

I agree... I would say bubbles as well. The pouches of pregnant males, especially at the 14 day mark, would be rather smooth but HUUUUUGE and look like they are ready to burst. None of my pregnant males ever had a problem navigating, even during birth.

If you don't want to try a pouch evac... as long as the seahorse is eating... wait and watch a few more days. If it really is pregnant, which I don't believe it is, the pregnancy wouldn't last longer than 21 days or so.

would the seahorse pushing its stomach area on the rocks help the bubble come out if it was a bubble... or to I have to make it come out...

We did the bobby pin thing.. but its pouch is still pretty big.. is that normal.. or is air still in there... If it is still big like that what are the chances it will happen again..

and any suggestions on how to help the breeding process along

if the pouch is still big there is likely still air in it . if you do not get all the bubbles out , he will be swimming upside down again soon .

for breeding I would suggest a taller tank , erectus ( "mustangs" ) dance up the water column as the egg transfer happens . if they do not have the room it will not happen .

will the pouch immediately go away.. if all the air is out..

and should we put them in the taller tank.. until they breed.. and then move them back to where we have them now...

or just keep them permanently in taller tank

in my experience the pouch will look deflated after the air is all out .

I would leave them in a taller tank permanently .
