Hello back ground information.

My name is Ty. My wife and I have done salt water aquariums for 5 years now. We are in the middle of transferring our old tank (set up for five years) and moving it into the new tank. A 20 gallon to a 50 gallon. I called your line today but they were unable to answer my question. Here is the set up and back ground information.

Old Tank 20 gallon (running 5 years)

Items-3 snails, 4 hermit crabs, live rock, 1 yellow watchman goby, 2 green clowngobbies, 1 ocellaris clownfish, 1 arrow head crab, 1 pencil urchin. yellow polys and green star polyp something or another. One snail that only hides under substrate. Set up with filter 125g, heater, aerator,

The New Tank 50 gallon, heater, aerator, 350 double biowheel filter, Coralife super skimmer needle wheel protein skimmer 65g. A hydor koralia evolution pump flow rate of 600gph. I am moving all creatures over to the new tank.

Recently we added too much stuff in the 20 gallon and the algae went out of control. (this was just after we changed lights from very old old style single halogen to the T5HO 36 inch. I have never really been able to get it back under control. But the Pencil urchin was mutating before that point and I knew the new tank was coming.

My question is have you ever heard of this strange mutated spine deal? They come out of the urchin at a singular point and then branch out into 3-6 spines on the end.

We have had this pencil urchin for approximately over two years. The mutations started approximately 4 months ago. What could be causing this? Is it sick? Is it a lack of nutrition? Something in the water? Or just our luck of the draw that we got one with mutated genetics?

Also how can I clean him so to get the algae off of his spines?

We are contemplating getting rid of him, as of lately he has been munching a lot on the live rock, and as we are starting to get into the corals.

Thank you

Ty

Getting rid of him would be wise, they get pretty big and bulky for a small setup like that.

However regarding the spine splitting.. admitly I've never heard or seen that before, could be a minor defect. Do the spines grow anymore or do those seem fully developed?

Cleaning is easy, just rip the algea off, they don't sting.
