My 10G nano Project Underay - Lots of Pictures!!!!!!

Sorry to hear about your clown.

I too have had some losses- though none attributed to water quality or chemistry. I lost my Lunare Wrasse in the most stupid way ever. He slept inside a hole in a rock every night. I guess he didn't realize he was getting bigger cause he wedged himself in there and died overnight. I had to cut the rock in half to get his gnarled body out.

I got some really awesome live rock from the Gulf of Mexico. It came with a million star fish, sea squirts, shrimp, crabs, nudibranchs, and killer crabs!!!

It ate a brand new $11.00 fish before it was in the tank two days. Then the crab ate it's replacement a day later!!! The crab now lives in a happy 10gal next to my nice tank.

Oh well, it's a learning experience i guess.

I like the way you keep all your wiring neat. Mine is a jumbled mess right now.

I recently got a Yellow head Sleeper Goby. She was pregnant and gave birth to a little tiny goby- but i didn't know she was pregnant so when it was born it was promptly chewed up by the other fish. :( I wish i'd have known.

Just watch them, they often like to filter sand. They scoop up a big mouthful of sand and swim up while spilling it out their gills. It's great to watch (like a little sand waterfall) , but they tend to get sand on everything (zoos, corals, LR) so keep dusting. I put a small piece of PVC with one end cut at a 45degree angle under my sand for it to sleep in at night. She loves it.

Also, watch your zoos. I see in the photos you have a big cluster of the greens (i think- pc monitors can be deceiving) nested in the middle of your LR. Once they get going they can start to cover everything! I guess if you frag them off and sell them you can pay for your hobby :D Other wise a lot of people keep them on little isolated "zoo islands" so they won't spread out of control.

Let me know how that sand works out. Is it real beach sand or a commercial product?

Love the pictures keep em' coming.

Hi

Well the Goby is dead too what a ball of a time im having put in the tank after an hour of acclimatising then it swam about for 5 min then jumped down the back in a compartment so fished it out and put it back in the tank.

Later on at night I had just gotten into bed and I heard a plop and then something wriggling around the carpet and to my shock the goby flapping around so I picked him up and put him back in about 30 mins later the same noise and again flapping about on the floor so I got some DVDs and polypockets and made a temporary lid to keep it in over night until I could go to the fish shop to get one of those drip trays to seal the tank.

After Getting the drip tray I had to cut a few holes to allow pipe work to pass through all seemed fine almost completely sealed apart from two 1" holes either side for each pipe. Perfect little buger can’t jump out now.

Returning home from work today looked in the tank couldn’t see it anywhere. Thought I would check the ground and there it was all dried up and dead OMFG how the hell did this suicidal fish get out it’s like bloody Houdini of the fish world. So back to no fish in the tank again and it lasted 24 hours so any advice on fish that will live and be good and not the jumpy suicidal kind would be good.

Its so annoying as all my water conditions are not at fault. Temp constantly sits at 26* when the fans are on which I have sorted now after the glass explosion. SG is 1.026, ammonia, nitrite and even nitrate’s are at 0ppm.

So i guess the Goby never got a chance to move the sand around everywhere. It had a little cave which it made it burrowed into it and stayed there most of the time for the 24 hours i had it the remainder on the carpet!!

Yeah im going to start selling some zoo's on eBay or swap with some people if there interested. The zoo's are looking healthy and all fully opened i originally bought 3 pieces of zoos on ebay the guy threw in 1 extra and the other night i fragged them so i now have 13 little bits of zoo's.

The sands good i like the aesthetic look a lot more. It was a commercial product although next time i may just use beach sand and just boil it and bake it to get rid of any crap.

I hate it when you start to type a reply and Reef Central decided to shut down for nightly maintenance. So let's try this again...

Sorry to hear about your Goby. Only 24 hrs- that sucks. I just lost a lionfish after 1 day. I think the owners of the fish shop over fed him cause when i got home his abdomen was all distended like it was gonna burst. Then he vomited it all up. These fish often eat themselves to death. Oh well, he was only $30.

One fish i think you would enjoy (my latest fish) is a Flasher wrasse.

This one is Paracheilinus mccoskeri. It's reef safe, small (about 3-4 inches adult) and has the most exquisite coloring.

When facing off another male or trying to mate with a female flasher wrasse it "flashes". It's colors deepen, and it extends all its fins like sails. It flashes some of the larger fish in my tank. I think this is so far my favorite fish.

I believe the carpenter wrasse is also a flasher wrasse- just a different species.

The only weird thing about them is that they don't sleep in the sand like some wrasses. They secrete a mucous cocoon around themselves at night. It's normal behavior. You do have to watch where they sleep. Mine slept near some finger sponge and where ever the mucous touched the sponge it died off. Most likely because the sponge couldn't filter water covered in slime.

It can be a jumper, though mine has never even tried.

I think for your sized tank one male and two females would make a really colorful, reef safe show.

Here's a link to some info.

It is a lovely fish. Unfortunately while I was on vacation a couple of weeks ago I was alerted by the woman watching ym cat that mine had jumped out of the tank. I was so sad. :*(

I just read through the entire post and..
I'm very impressed! You've overcome some pretty daunting obstacles, and seem to still be pretty upbeat about the whole project!
Please, keep us updated as things happen. I'm sure things will work out just fine, just keep you chin up!
Thanks for making a journal for us all to enjoy.
