Below you will read about the history of my current Mixed Reef. I hope you enjoy the read, and not find it to be to boring.
Approximately 11 yrs. ago with a 120 gallon 5' X 1.5' X 2'.2" AGA tank with external overflow, and a custom built silly sump with 3 compartments, and no baffles.LOL I was running this tank with a Turboflotor Multi 1000, no power heads, just the Iwaki WRLT 40 through a SWID, VHO, and best of all TAP WATER.
Sorry this is the only pic I have of it.
I was barely able to keep leathers, and some anemone. I couldn't even keep shrooms, they would just disappear.
My fowlr always did well.
The current set up came to be in 2007. It all began with my inheriting my best friend's 155 gallon Non RR Bow Front when she passed away to young! (Miss you Lee)!!
I had a 5' 120 gallon that I had set up in the 1990's also non RR. I used "Tap Water Filter" along with the "best" water conditioner to fill the tank. For years I attempted to keep it going, but very few corals would live or thrive in it.
When my best friend past (Sept.,2006), and the family told me she had told them I was to take her tank, and fish I also was very sick. I too was battling Cancer so it wasn't an easy task to deal with. I made a few trips back & forth until I got all the animals out. Then a good friend along with his brother picked up the tank, stand, wet/dry, and what ever equipment she had.
The tank, and stand sat on my porch for months until I finally asked for help from local friends on another forum. Two great reefers came to my rescue. They took a window out (yes they put it back), brought my friend's old set up in, and took my old set up out.
A couple of weeks later one of the two rescuers came back with his lovely wife, and a cooler full of corals!!! For which I will remain for ever grateful!!!!!!!
I couldn't live with the 6" of scratches along the bottom of the tank, and hubby graciously got me a New RR 155 gallon Bow Front, and an RO/DI. What a difference those two things made!!! For the first time I didn't have to battle GHA!
Once again I had to go ask for help from my Reefer family! Once again they came through!!! A group of great people came over, and basically did all the work.
All I did was break down the old setup, makeup the water we would need, clean up the LR (sort of cooked it). I had good old Southdown sand which I was advice to dump. Sand was replaced with Fine Grain ESV sand (big mistake). Any way, the tank went up, and there is when my true "Reefing" began.
