My 1st 55g build (after 1 month)...

Looks good! I have an AquaC remora HOB skimmer on my 55g. I love it. Made a HUGE difference in water quality/clarity.

Which one do you have?

The one with Maxi-Jet 1200 Pump?

I don't think at this time I'm going to go with a sump (maybe on my next tank) so I'm going to need a good HOB skimmer.

Few updates:

I know you all said definitely get a skimmer before new lights but I found a deal I couldn't pass up.

I got 2 GLO T5 HO ballast with 2 daylight and 2 actinic bulbs for $100. All 4 lights have individual reflectors.

In the process of making an Oak 2 door canopy for the top so I can get the lights installed.

HOB Skimmer will be next on my list.

I will be posting a few pics of the Canopy project. I hope to get it all assembled tomorrow.

Question for you guys. Does it look like I have enough live rock in there? Or should it go higher in my tank?

I have always used a pound per gallon of live rock. You may want to look in to to that as you do not use a sump. The filtration benefits would be the main reason. As far as going taller with your stack, that's completely up to you. In my opinion it's a little more pleasing to the eye to see peaks and valleys in an aquascape rather than a shelf of rock. It will also give you a little more of an option on coral placement. My $.02

I would go with more live rock....check out brs eco rock. Good cheap rock that will be "live" with time. I put 25 pounds in my established tank and love it. I would clean it well and cycle for a bit to be on the safe side.

I have a aqua c remora skimmer that is basically new that I could let go for 60 bucks(discount for a newbie). It doesn't have a pump but you can get one cheap.

Awesome!!

I will take it. I wont be up in Buffalo area until a week from Sunday. Ill be up for the Sabres game.

Let me know if that works.

Thanks!

Sunday the 20th should work for me. PM me next week to confirm.

My rock looked good after a few months - coralline and other critters from my live rock spread to the new rock. This will vary from tank to tank. BRS rock is a good alternative to spending 5 to 8 bucks a pound for live rock.

Ran into a few snags making my canopy but it all should be done and up by Friday evening. I'll post some pics once its done.

Canopy done, MJ 1200 pump came in today too, skimmer is installed and T5s!!!

Been a battle the past few months. Had a bout with a parasite that wiped out my poor clowns. :-( Pretty sure it was velvet.

I've added more rock, I think too much actually and hope to be making some good changes going forward.

Waited about a month after bout with that parasite and added a couple of black damsels in. They've been in for about a week now and they're doing good.

Soon enough I'll be taking them back to the LFS and picking out a new pair of clowns.

yea looking back on that clown pic, u can see the start of the brooklynella. I know u are scared to put any good fish in before testing the waters so to speak, but everyone has made teh mistake of adding damsels.

i had a pretty similar setup at first like yours. youll learn and if you are serious about teh hobby, which im thinking you are, youll progress and get better and better. its a constant learning experience, even for the best aquarists.

are you planning on ever adding corals? post some current full tank shots (FTS)

Yea I've learned so much since I started. There is definitely a lot to learn.

My buddy had to get rid of a few corals a while back so he gave them to me. They seem to be doing pretty well.

-- A few orange cap pieces
-- FrogSpawn
-- Green Star Polyps
-- A Leather (Think its some type of Devils Finger)
-- A Few Mushrooms
-- A couple of Small Xania frags
-- A few Zoas

I just added more rock this past weekend, but I think I have too much in there. Some people say 2lb of rock for every gallon your tank holds and I'm right about there now, but it seems like there is too much in there. Not enough room for what I want to do down the road.

Things definitely aren't set yet. I've been playing around with things quite a bit in the last few weeks but here are some quick pics I took along the way.

Ur canopy scares me ( i har a tank crack in half cause of a canopy door hitting my trim and 60 gals of water 7 fish and all corals went carpet surfing on my laet tank)

I would redo the way the canopy hinges and swings asap. All it takes is a little slip to crack a tank with a poor designed canopy.

Not trying to be a jerk im trying to help u out. Looking out for ur investment a d ur house. Good luck
