My Golden Dwarf Moray (gymnothorax Melatremus) eel finally got here today! He is so freakin' awesome i cant even stand it! He's about 7 inches long and about as this as a pencil but really cool looking. Nice yellow color and has that great moray looking face and mouth that i love! Plus, the awesome "cat's eyes" morays have. Without question the best $175 i have ever spent on the tank(so far, lol!).

Big, big, big, HUGE props to Leslie at Wetpetshawaii for hooking me up with this. GREAT vendor and HIGHLY recommend!!! If you are getting a GDM, you'd be crazy to not go thru him!

Heres a few pics of him in my qt. Sorry for the quality, between my crappo camera skills and him moving all over the place finding his bearings, i couldnt get any really good pics.

Here he is swimming in the back

This is the best pic of his face i could get

I know this is the crappy pic but it's the only one that shows his actual color. This is how yellow he is in person!

Has the eel eaten anything yet? I have had several over the years and all have been 'problem eaters'.

No, i picked him up from Fedex at about 9am today. He had a long trip so to be safe, i drip acclimated him for a long time, about 4 hours. I just put him in the tank about 90 minutes ago so i figured i'd give him a little time to adjust and relax before trying to feed him.

Researching them, problem eating certainly seems to be the #1 complaint from eel owners. He's going into my 180g which i feed heavy, both the fish and corals. Hopefully, with all that food floating around in there he can find enough to do well. He's so small it shouldnt take much. He looks like he could barely take down a whole PE mysis shrimp!

DUDE THATS ONE OF THE NICEST GOLDEN DRAWF EELS I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!!! U ARE VERY LUKY TO GET HIM THEY DONT REALLY COME IN THAT MUCH OF AN ORANGE COLOUR LET ALONE THE AMAZING PRICE....IM SO ENVIOUS OF U :p

reef safe?...

Supposedly, he is reef safe. He is so small, there is no way he could take down any fish except maybe a really small goby for at least awhile. I dont have have any shrimp so i dont know about that. I have hermits but his head and mouth are so small, i wonder if he could even bother them.

Use a feeding stick to feed him. Put a peice of shrimp or squid on a stick and dangle near his face. He will eat it. May go on a hunger strike for sometime. My snowflake went on a 10 day hunger strike after a week in my tank. They will really be on the prowl for an escape route for the first couple weeks but should settle down after getting comfortable in your tank. I have had a snowflake for around a year now so I learned alot. I don't know what other fish you have but my eel tends to get picked on by all my fish from my dwarf angel to my lunar wrasse but it is nothing they can't handle. I feel bad for him sometimes when the fish bite his body while he is out trying to eat. He doesn't like that too much. They are really hardy and apart from escaping the tank they are tough as nails. Good luck-he's a beauty!

gorgeous! I want one that colour, but trying to get a good price up here in Canada is out of the question so far. If i could get one at that price i would snatch it up.

anybody have one in a reef tank?
and how big do you expect him to get?
Thats are wonderful eel. Good luck with him
I'm jealous :)

I've had mine for about a year in my reef tank. He doesn't hurt shrimp, crabs, or any inverts. They don't have the teeth for crushing shells like a snowflake.

They will go after small fish if they're small enough and they're hungry enough. I have to feed mine EVERY day to keep him sated or he'll go looking for a meal. Most fish are too big for him to take down so he doesn't even try. However, I do hav a bunch of small juvie flashers. I've seen him take one down before... :(

I tried to feed him last night with a feeding prong and he was NOT interested. He almost looked at me like "are you joking" when i had it in front of him! lol I'll try again tonight.

My 180g that he is going into is sealed up tight but the qt tank he is in now i realized yesterday isnt even close to secure! He was on top of the water probing for an opening and had about half his body out of the tank. I rigged whatever i could over the openings and lowered the water level about 4 inches so i think he should be ok in there and not get out!

I've had a 2.5 foot long zebra eel for 2 years. He blew off shrimp and squid day one and two and then I tried crab and he acted like a crack junkie.
Now I use a blender on equal parts crab and for saving dollars squid and shrimp which are cheap. I don't have the recipe on me but have pulled from Fenner's and some aquarium and use some brewer's yeast, multivitamin, cod liver oil, ect. I place the blended stuff on a pan, place it in the freezer, later cut it up into strips approx 3/4 cm by 2-3 cm and feed it with tongs.
HE LOVES the eel chow and my fish do to.
My zebra used to actually lets my coral banded pick stuff off his nose while hugging his face. He did eat my decorator crab.......

Nope, not yet:mad:

I tried last night and earlier today but nothing. I was actually gonna try again with the night lights in a few minutes and see if he was hungry.

Woohoo!!! He just ate!!!!:)

I had some leftover thawed out PE mysis soaking in selcon that i feed my fish. I put a big fat one on the feeding prong but halfway down it fell off and landed right in front of the pvc pipe he hangs out in. After about 30 seconds, he poked his head out and went right after it and gulped it down!!!

I would be REALLY psyched if he would start eating pe mysis since i feed that very heavy in the tank he is going into!
