My 240 built in a DIY cab. Old school with a DSB and Carlson surge device.

So i decided to start building a bookcase that would go next to my aquarium, ended up building an entire cabinet for my new 240.

The tank is 72 x 30w x24. I am building a dual carlson surge device that will trap bubles in a old sump before it dumps in the display.

Planned lighting is going to be 2 x 600w 10k MH with led rope for moonligting.

Flow will be established with the surge, and a closed loop plumbed to the bottom of the tank for lower flow. surge will be directed to the upper half of the tank. CL is driven by a reeflo dart.

Equipement room is located in the basement, and holds a 150 gallon sump for water only, the sump delivers water to a 4x4 frag tray, 75 gallon tank full of liverock, 56 gallon refugium, the display, and the 30 gallon surge tank. delivered by a reeflo barracuda

Filtration will be approx. 1000 lbs of live rock, a 4" deep sand bed concealed behind the trim of the cabinet, macro algea, a planned but not built yet turf scrubber, and a underpowered skimmer.

Planned livetock and design will be very minimal live rock structures supported by acrylic rod sitting on a 4" pvc stand to keep it off the bottom. I am going for a reef crest look that will be very open for large fish and plenty of grow out for the sps dominated tank. I will aslo be keeping lps and clams. Most of the fish and corals are in the fish room waiting for their new home to be built. I broke down a established 120 to start this project in the same location.

I will update those intrested as things get put together.

The stand is not quite completed yet, i still need to trim out the openings for the tank, and a few of the shelves. Bulkheads arive monday, and i hope to have the setup complete and full of fish by friday.

Thanks for looking!

looking forward to watching this one. You cabinet looks amazing, great work.
I assume that due to the photograph you already have the "underpowered" skimmer. I would think that it would be better to run an appropriate skimmer but just part time?
It would be easier to increase the hours that it runs if you ever encounter a problem, just a thought

Im just not a fan of skimmers for the most part. My tank that i just broke down was amazing with the skimmer hardly running, plus, when i get this up and running i want to play with a turf scrubber.

Thanks for the compliment on the cabinet! getting ready right now to finish the trim and start sanding.

Thanks guys! hopefully today i will finish sanding. The bulkheads are due today from UPS and i am ready to get on to the next phase.

Nice work!!! I hope you try the ATS and let us know how you like it. Actually, I'm suprised that more reefers don't use them.

Oh i will try it for sure. I have a huge basement fish room with plenty of space to tinker with stuff. I have most of the parts for the ATS, just havent had time to build it yet. I will continue to run my skimmer though, but mostly for oxygenation and to promote higher pH.

I keep changing my mind on whether to go ATS or mangroves. I have a spare tank/space that could be used for either in the filtration, I will eagerly watch this thread to see if it sways me to using an ATS.

they way i see it is it cant hurt. Hell, i might through some mangroves in there as well. I love to tinker with gear and explore ideas outside the box.

here is the stand trimmed. Door still needs to be built, but its all but done.

man your stand looks outstanding...I just wish I had more tools so I can do stuff like that. I will be following along for sure.

Thanks!

The only tools i have are a $100 table saw, a 12" chop saw, a hand circular saw, and a finish nailer. Not recommended setup for this kind of work. It was one hell of a process to get decent cuts. This is all skinned on 2x4, pretty ghetto looking until it got covered. Its made out of oak ply and solid oak facing from HD.

Time for a update.

Yesterday was productive. I got the closed loop plumbed up. the first coat of stain and poly on the stand, and the rock work started. Todays menu is more of the same.

Thanks! Basic shell is made now, ended up with 6 pillars and a bridge. There is some pipe still exposed, but i have a plan for that..

Tape is still on the glass because we are not through staining it. My deadline is fast approaching, we have company due this weekend and i was suppossed to be done last weekend. Running about a week behind. I figure i have about 2 days to make the RO which i just started now.. im going to squeak this project out just in time.
