My 29G Biocube Build Thread

Well, the Vortech purchase is on pause...
I'm at the do or die point with my cyano, 24hrs into my first treatment and I'm less than opportunistic....Was cleared by my LFS to bring back my Canary Blenny (probably replace him with the tail spot) because he's not eating, and if you can name it we've tried it =(

So...in 24hrs I'm siphoning the visible cyano out while in the process of doing the 20% water change then immediately dosing the tank again with double the recommended dose (suggestion of my LFS, who I trust dearly) and I'm also wrapping the tank in a blanket and going lights out to try and completely eradicate any cyano. Then once I've finished that cycle I'll start the skimmer and phosphate reactor back up and hopefully life will be peaceful.

This weekend is a HUGE swap here in Michigan so I'm sure I'll be getting some goodies (barring the cyano somehow stays around).

Well Chemi-Clean did not take care of the cyano for me, so in combination with a water change, siphoning of the entire sand bed and rocks, wet skimming, boosting the flow through the phosphate reactor, and going lights of for 3 days I praying to God this stuff goes away. If not I'll be using pharmaceutical grade Erythromycin, My LFS said they noticed a change in the effectiveness of Chemi-clean as of late and attribute that to different ingredients in their product. Sand bed and glass is 99% clear of Cyano, so lights back on tomorrow and a lot has changed!
Expect a FTS soon but for now:

Man, I can't believe you are still struggling with the cyano battle! Uck! Hope you get it worked out quick, you are definitely doing everything correctly so it's hard to even comprehend what could be driving your outbreak.

On the other hand, the adds you have selected look awesome!

Thank you! After about a hour, I managed to siphon about the top quarter inch of sand out of the tank, blasted everything off the rocks, then rinsed and cleaned the sand, let it air dry, and reinstated it into the tank...so far only very slight traces of cyano which I'll slowly eliminate over time during my weekly water changes. For now here's an ok FTS. I'm going to borrow a buddies camera and get some better shots soon, plus it'll give the acros time to color back up.

I was in one of those moods with the epoxy where I didn't feel like fighting the super glue to make 'em stick so I used ample amounts of epoxy and just got it over with =)

My purple firefish is still boycotting me, and has yet to come out from the caves. The most I've seen is his eye ball. The wheelers shrimp goby and tiger shrimp are doing great. The tailspot and two clowns are also doing very well. Everyone is eating pellets like good little fish :bounce2: (minus the firefish because I never see him). My Tailspot is awesome I absolutely love his behavior!

Thanks for the kind words. I was about a mouse click away from getting the MP10 then a dropped a very large undisclosed amount on some new DJ gear and then a pretty substantial amount on some coral so spending is in time out for me haha. I already have the water director as well....

  • Plumbed the TLF reactor into my return, I now have the phosguard tumbling nicely. It's been running for a week or two and my leather hasn't showed any negative reactions
  • The cyano seems to be under control, spots will pop up here and there but I just siphon the problem spot out, rinse the sand, let it dry, rinse again and replace.
  • I'm really happy with my clowns and wheeler's shrimp goby
  • I'm extremely unhappy with my purple firefish living under the rock, honestly, I have no idea if he's even still alive because I haven't seen him in weeks and he doesn't come out when I feed.
  • I was absolutely loving my tailspot blenny, then I woke up one morning and my entire tank was covered in a thick mucus and I haven't seen him in 36hrs (it's usually rare to not see him) so I assume he's KIA. The only culprits are the emerald, red or blue hermit, and the pistol shrimp. However, the hermits IMO are just too slow, the pistol has yet to even make a snapping sound and usually hangs out and plays with rest of the community. So this leaves me to believe it's the emerald. I had a peppermint awhile back that was KIA assumingly by the emerald as he was the only one in the tank that was capable. Thoughts?

Emerald is my vote. Had one in my tank for a few days and got rid of him when I saw it trying to chase down my YWG and had attacked a couple nassarius snails.

Sucks about the blenny. We love our tail spot. Very colorful and very active.

The tank being covered in thick mucous doesn't sound right, I've never had a fish die or be killed in the tank and cause a mucous coating (or ever had mucous in the tank at all). Did you think that perhaps whatever the mucous was that it could have been the culprit? Do you have any pics of it?

Crabs are definitely opportunistic eaters, but keeping them fed well typically keeps them from getting opportunistic on livestock. My emerald has been generally peaceful for a year. I've seen it eat some bristle worms and algae, but that's about it.

Now my brown mithrax hitchhiker, that's a whole different ballgame! I have now caught him in the act of killing and eating a fish. I'd look around for any possible hitchhikers (crabs / mantis shrimp / etc). That may be another cause. I still suspect the mucous coating though.

Now I feel like an idiot, I walk by the tank to see all five of my fish looking at me....lol I give up

Still no cool on the goop stuff, I blasted it off the rocks, did a water change and everything is fine now 48hrs later...

Well..
Seems the cyano battle is over, water parameters are perfect, I've got one minor plumbing issue to change and then it seems to be smooth sailing. I lost my NightSky Milli frag to RTN and the surrounding stylo and stag arco weren't looking to healthy, since my water is perfect, and I definitely have enough turnover, it was narrowed down to my leather engaging in chemical warfare. So, I removed him and returned him to LFS, and picked up two AWESOME mini-colonies of acro's. FTS and updates will be posted by the end of next week!

Glad you won this battle! Between vodka dosing and a hefty CUC addition my tank is finally coming under control as well!

LFS

Congrats! We are victorious! I was beginning to wonder if it'd ever happen! lol

I hear ya! Have a feeling we've only won the battle though not necessarily the war :uzi:. Keeps life interesting for sure though. Now I need to setup my auto feeders in preparation for vacation this summer. Oh, and I need to figure out how to dose vodka while I'm away as well!
