My 29g reef tank

where did you guys buy your lighting fixtures because i have a 29 gallon FOWLR that i want to turn into a reef. any advice would help a lot.
thanks,
Lionfishfinatic

PS: also how do you like your coralife 65? im getting a coralife 125 for my 75 gallon.

Stunning. Absolutely stunning.

What lights are you using? I imagine you modified the hood to get 195w? I'd like to find some how to add more to mine. It is only 130w stock.

Thanks everyone for the compliments. I am a total noob and most of my ideas for my tank have come from this board.

As to the lighting, I started with a current usa orbit light with 130 watts. After I purchased a clam, I upgraded my light by retrofitting another 65 watt bulb into the fixture. It was very easy to do.

1) bend over mounting prongs of existing lamps to make space
2) add new mounting prongs for retrofit
3 drill a small hole for the cord. The ballast is external

Total time 30 minutes to figure everything out. The only downside is the moonlights are blocked by the new bulb. They still work but you will only see a very low level of light at night.

Once I upgraded the light, my corals increased in colors and growth rate. I am running, the stock bulbs from the current fixture and the retrofit has a 10k/actinic set up

As to the Corallife skimmer 65....it gets the job done for only a few dollars. It works well as a hang on as well as in the sump.

Thanks again everyone

Thanks a lot for putting the names of all of the corals next to the pictures on the first page...really helps us noobs figure out what we're lookin at...well it helped me at least

very nice looking by the way, and great photos

RFC,
I have a couple of questions for you cause I am going to set up a 29 pretty soon here. you do have a really good looking tank, so I want to ask you if there is anything you wish you would of done?

Would you go skimmer less?
I have a 250W MH, do you think that would be over kill on that tank?
Would you of drilled the back of the tank instead of having a HOB overflow?

I know those are lengthy questions, but thanks for your help.

ryanj- i use a 250w mh on my 29 with very good results, just make sure you have it about 12 inches above the water. that seemed to be the best height for mine.

I'm a newb, so forgive my ignornance. But isn't the point behind a MH light simply because it can penetrate through the water at high intensity? Couldn't just enough PC lighting in a reletively shallow tank (20" or less) do the same job?

Hi Ryan,

JMHO......
I think a skimmer is a must for a reef tank.

250W MH would be what I would get if upgrading my PC lights

Drilling the back is ideal but my tank was already set up and running so I went with a hang on back overflow system.

Gook Luck with your tank
