Here are a few new pictures now that the clam is getting used to the tank. Plus he's got a friend.
This is my older maxima. It looks much worse compared to the new one. Odds are it has been picked on by the Copperband Butterfly more than once. I believe the mantle may be pinched, and dipping it in freshwater for 5 minutes may help. It has been a while since I've had clam problem so I'll need input from others before I do anything.
I pulled it out of the tank late last night, so it will have plenty of time to heal up in the new tank.
The ricordia has been stretching and looking kind of ugly in my main reef, so I moved it into the Pico just to see if it will recover, split, or heal. Plus it was small.

- are you planning on keeping this little thing permanent since its so successful so far? maybe in place of a coffee table book?
- what is mantle pinching? is that the hole in the clam's top side? either way i've seen that before in clams in my LFS and it doesnt look good!

I was dealing with this in two of my clams...one made it, one didnt. Good luck, both of your clams are gorgeous.

Thanks Nick. I read up to page 9, then realized it was never going to end. I posted on page 19. Hopefully some good advice will come my way.
Bryan, mantle pinching is when the scalloped part of the clam does lie smoothly on the surface of the shell, but curls up tightly and wrinkles. The older maxima on the left seems to have that problem compared to the brand new one on the right.

Synopsis of it all was that a protozoan was what was causing the PM in these particular clams. An ID test was not run on these protozaons due to cost issues. It was determined that the protozoan in question can be killed in freshwater, but IME the symptoms of PM cam back w/in a 2-3 week period of the dip causing me to believe the clam was covering up, and thereby protecting the protozoan from the freshwater...
Metronidozole was also determined to be effective in killing the protozoan, and thats what I was using in conjuntion with hyposalinity for a lengthy period of time, (1 month @ 1.015 via refractometer). One clam made it, the other didnt....
Hopefully, this isnt PM like Mojo and Barry are thinking...

I hope your lil Maxima recovers soon, because I love the contrast between those two clams.
What's your gameplan for keeping calcium levels sufficient, with two clams, in such a small environment?

It looks great...love the clams.I would rethink using the water from your main tank though.I thought the same...I have a 3 gal.It did'nt take me long to realize that the main tank can handle the water that is in it....but the little one cannot!I had some major issues with algae blooms..it looked horrible,until I started doing WC's w/ fresh saltwater.melev said:

That's surprising, because the water in your little tank would have the same concentrations of algae causing organics and phosphates from a
ppm perspective relative to the water in your main display.
IE- the algae blooms you were having in your little tank had the same potential to happen in your larger tank. What I suspect happens is that the increased circulation, oxygenation, and export you have on the larger tank hindered algae. What is even more likely is that nutrients in your already established water had the opportunity to meet with new nutrients from your new budding little tank- new livestock mixed with old water and different dynamics.
I actually liked Marc's idea of using water from the main system. The little one can handle the water with very meticulous and careful husbandry...

I am just saying that was my experience.The main tank has alot of corals...critters..fish,but it also has alot of circulation,a refugium,skimmer, a bunch of LR,etc.The little tank does not...it has only a few corals,no skimmer,no fuge,and only 3 LBS of LR...really,I could'nt even see in the tank,that's how bad it got.It's also a pain to clean, as I can barely get my hand in it.It's a modified eclipse...which for me is also part of the problem,since it is plastic,it does'nt clean up very easily.
I just think in my situation,that a 3 gal tank cannot handle the water from a full blown 75 gal mixed reef.I think he may find out the same...trying to put water from a 280 into a 2 gal.
