My 40 Breeder tank.

Skimmer upgrade ?'s

Skimmer upgrade ?'s

hey guys, I am wondering that. if I was to upgrade from a eshopps psk 75 on my 40 breeder. to a S120 or something equal to. would that be overkill for my 40 ? I love my eshopps psk 75 , and it does what it suppose to. I love the support, and all from sandy at eshopps, any time I had a issue with my skimmer, she has taken care of me. So , I would love to have a better skimmer, but is there a point of where ,to big, will not do justice ?

I am looking into making a custom sump/ refugium. to do away of the HOB mod fuge on my fluval c3 fuge. I want to maybe do a life reef overflow to filter sock, and skimmer in the same chamber, then flow to the refuge, and flo to ther return, with a rack of filter floss, and chem pure, puigen, and pump return to the main display .
So with so many different , setups, I am not sure which way to go, and the set up how to. I am going to use a 20gal long for the sump. But the baffles where, and how many, and how much flow trough it. I want to get a double down on the over flow for one as a just in case the other got clogged. like a herbie deal., andflow through the filter sock/ skimmer, and to the fuge, and then return. But What flow of return pump. I hear get a ehiem is the better way to go. Input, and Ideas is very welcome. thanks alot guys. Chris

I completely missed it...and it includes a link...which I hate clicking on. hah hah.

BUT...I think generally having an oversized skimmer is a good idea. I have an IN180 on my somewhat understocked (fish-wise) 120g tank that I rarely feed AND those skimmers are more accurately rated for size than most other skimmers. Typically, you should consider the max tank size rating for a skimmer to be MUCH less than what the manufacturer says. For example, if a skimmer is recommended for a 200g tank, I certainly would never consider it adequate for a 180g tank. It's almost always more appropriate for something like a 100-125g tank.

On the question 'is the skimmer ever really TOO BIG for a tank?' I guess that's possible but it's pretty unlikely that you'd find something rated for 1000g being used on a 55g tank (or some other example). People who can afford a skimmer big enough for a 1000g tank won't JUST have a 55g system...typically.

I am both a gator fan , and a vol fan... I was a gator fan for 30 years. since a kid. but went to many UT games, back in the day when good ole Majors was here.

But on to my subject. Yeah , I was just wanting to know if a eshopps s120 or a Vertex IN100 would be to much for a 40 Breeder. I have a yellowhead goby, 2 OS clowns, toby puffer, and lawnmower blenny. Along with mostly softie corls, and LPS. not enough light for SPS. I tried a birdsnest, and it on top of my rock scape to get most light possible, and well it didn't work out. 4 bulb t5.. But , I still run my older 24in that was on my 20 gal, before upgrading to a 40 Breeder. I have been thinking of LED DIY supplement build to add on to my current light fixture.

K2 , thanks for the info... How do u like your SWC ? I have heard great stories about this skimmer, but I haven't had any exp. with them. Just eshopps ! BUt I do like the S-120, and the cuctomer svc with sandy at eshopps. She has allways taken care of me.
Even when I had to send in my skimmer to them for a cracked neck. New body, and asked for a silencer, and got it too free of charge. now thats customer svc.....
