My 500 + gallon system. Last 13 years to now. Build, Aquascaping & more. Lots of pics

thats awesome! Love the look of your aquarium now with that shimmer from the kessils. Its crazy how compact they are compared to those old reef tech leds you had. awesome job and hope to see more updates. new skimmer and lights are definitely a big upgrade!

Lightrack looks awesome with the Kessils. Very tidy and detailed. Just had a look at your videos and found the LA Fishguys Episodes about your System and just watched all of 'em. Really cant wait on my Kessil order to arrive now.

Hope you have fun with your lights. :-) I've read in an earlier post you switched your Skimmer to an Royal Exclusiv Supermarin. I am just about to order my Skimmer for my new System and cant get my head around the Royal Esclusiv supermarin or the new Tunze Master Doc Skimmers. I have just returned from Bangkok last week and seen the Tunze Masterdoc in Action from one of the SiamReefClub Guys. The Tunze has some neat features like Antioverfoamprotection and no fiddling as its autoadjusting. What did drive you to get the Royal Exclusiv? I mean besides its no doubt one of the best High End Skimmer on the Market its also super heavy on the Moneyside. If my better half sees the next CC she prolly kill me with far over +1,5k€ for that mantoy, lol.

Having had an Alpha 300 that was built by Bubble King, I was already familiar with the quality of BK skimmers. The Supermarin is arguably one of the best skimmers out there in it's class. I chose that largely because I was familiar with the products and covet them. It was a skimmer that was proven and pretty much guaranteed to meet my expectations. I'm not one to experiment with my tanks and only use quality products. That is not say the Tunze skimmers aren't quality because I am sure they are, but the BK is proven and I like the RD3 Speedy pump as it is a very high quality pump that allows fine tuning.

Thanks for your explanation. As im a total Control Freek fine tuning and integration with an Apex is also very high on the list. Does the RD3 Speedy allow for 0-10v Input over a VDM? I will take my questionaire over to a PM to not fill up this wonderful Build thread with other mans questions. :-)

Had too look the Videos of your Kessils again today. Great stuff. :-) love the Shimmer.

They are coming out with 0-10v control on the RD3 Speedy's but I don't think they have released that yet. Like you, I am a control freak also. My Apex is pretty extensive with over 40 active outlets spread across 6 EB8's and an EB4 along with multiple Tunze's, ATO, lighting, PH, ORP, Salinity, Water On The Floor Sensors, Self Cleaning Skimmer Head etc... That said, it's much easier to push a button on the pump control then to change a profile or even log into fusion to adjust the skimmer pump. As such, 0-10v control wouldn't be all that useful in my opinion on the skimmer pump. For the RD3 flow pumps, that is a different story and could be very useful for recirculation purposes. Even if my RD3 skimmer pump had 0-10v control, I doubt I would use it as I like the convenience of push button control which the Apex would otherwise override. Plus the RD3 Pump Controller looks good mounted to the inside of my door under the tank. ;)

just browsed the german tech board on royal esclusive. the 10v interface box is available allready. quite pricey doh. there are some pump models that will have the interface buildt into the main controller you pictured above but i couldnt get info which models. i decided i will go for the supermarin 200 internal for my 200+ gallon system and change to the tunze 9430 masterdoc on my 150+ gallon. best of both worlds then. :-) cheers, chris

You will love that skimmer!

i think so. the build quality is impressive. any news on your kessil installation?

Lights are in and running and the tank seems to be happy. So far, no adverse reaction from any of the corals. If anything, most seem to be responding with improved extension. My hammers look like they really like the lights as do my leathers, fingers, polyps, mushrooms and cults. I'm really happy with the results and love the shimmer and the improved sunrise and sunset. It's much more seamless than my Reeftech's but that was largely because I had an east to west sunrise and sunset vs all the lights dimming at once evenly. Now I also have a much more gradual increase/decrease in intensity and color change from deep blue to a crisper white light. What I love the most is the central control via my Apex. With the Reeftech's I used a bluetooth connection to program them.

I may add one more A360 to the end of the tank. If not I will move two of the lights to give me a bit more light on the end of the peninsula. I have a pair of seaswirls up top on the tank that cause some shadowing along the corners at the end of the tank. I moved the 2 lights on the end of the light rack a bit to help with that but I can do better if I move the two lights so they are centered between the seaswirls. To do that I would need to add an aluminum bridge between the light rack frame to bring the lights closer to the center on the end of the rack. I made an offer on another new 360WE I came across. If he takes me up on it, than I will add one. If not, I will move two of them. Either way I will need to add the aluminum bridge which is an easy task. I just need to go to Home Depot and grab the aluminum and cut it to size. Then I will have something to mount them too in an ideal location while also being able to adjust the position.

THanks for the updates. What brand and where did you get those articulated mounts?

I assembled the articulating mounts myself from parts I got several sources. I had used many of the same parts for my Reeftechs so i had them on hand. I am in the process of putting together a kit for them as I had several left over parts. Send me PM with how many you would want and I will let you know when I have them ready to go.

Thank you! I've been looking for the perfect mount system for 6 a360s and I think you got it right! PM sent.

Late sunset with the Kessils. It looks a bit bluer in the video than it was first hand but as you can see, the shimmer is still pretty amazing despite the lower light intensity and color.

Very nice, love the shimmer.... So many light choices, still deciding what to use.... Anything that made you choose the Kessils vs the competition??

I'm curious about the house training of the iguana as well. Is he litter box trained? How did you do it and was it hard?

Hey Scott. I'm curious why you went with the 360 at this point. I like the lights personally, but I hear through the grapevine that Kessil did not. They discontinued the 360 model recently. It looks like the 380 model will be introduced at MACNA.

Sorry but you don't know what you're talking about.

Kessil has not discontinued the A360E and there is no A380 coming. There is a an H380 announced for the horticulture market.

You're on top of it with the A360s Scott. Ignore the rumor mill.

Amazing. Your tank looks amazing.

Thank you very much!

I chose the Kessils for a few reasons. My number 1 priority was Apex compatibility. #2 was ease of installation on to my light rack. Shimmer and cost were also considerations. My other two options were Radion Pro G3's and Hydra 52's. At the end of the day, the Kessils allowed me the most flexibility for mounting and coverage with my light rack and did so at a lower cost. Albeit only slightly compared to the Hydra's. The shimmer obviously was a great upside as is Kessils quality and support.

I'm curious about the house training of the iguana as well. Is he litter box trained? How did you do it and was it hard?

He is litter box trained. He lives on a couch in the other room but gets along with the two dogs, the cat and us people. He comes when I call him as long as he can see me. As for litter box training him, it was pretty easy as I've done it before. They are very habitual in that the tend to go to the bathroom in the same place. Place a litter box with water in it where they go to the bathroom and that is usually all it takes to condition them to the box. Then after a couple weeks, replace the litter box with litter and add some of their poop to it. You can also try bypassing the water in the box but I've always found that water triggers them to go so it's worked well for me.

Yea, I wasn't too worried. I dug around an watched the MACNA news as well but as I said, I didn't really give a second thought to it.

Yeah, honestly we are just guessing on the Kessil thing. It is true that Kessil is not satisfied with the 360, and that some sites no longer carry it. Sometime in the near future I would expect an upgrade based on the aforementioned H380, but any info on that truly is just rumor at this point. You did the right thing.
I've been watching the LA fishguy's episodes, so congrats' on the guest host gig... Really is kind of a bummer for Jim to have lost clients, but that's the economy that was shoved down our thoughts.:sad1:
The hobby is still growing, so like the man said, "Keep moving foreword".
