My 55 gallon reef project

I put a CBS in my tank about two weeks ago and haven't seen it since. I had a lot of supposed peppermints in the tank, but never see them either...I guess I should clean the glass!

My CBS was a great addition to the 29g, but he was caught many times late at night holding two halves of a shrimp in his tiny claws obviously enjoying not only the kill but a fresh meal. Kind of aggravated me.

I had a gorgeous cleaner shrimp in the same tank, and they were always at polar opposites of the aquarium at all times.

The day I moved my livestock from the 29g to the 280g, I found the cleaner shrimp in two halves. I was so angry because it had lived for over a year with the CBS and was huge. The CBS was added to my 280g, but one day I never saw it again. Those shrimp can be predatorial, and are definitely nocturnal in that they travel the tank way more at night and seem to just hang out in one spot during the day.

Well I had a taker on the stuff in my qt tank. I sold the shrimp, a couple pieces of rock, 2 sand sifting stars, a few soft coral frags, some gsps, the damsel shown above, and various snails and hermits for $40. I thought is was a pretty good deal.

I can now concentrate on taking care of my goby. I changed out a good share of the water from his tank this evening after the rest of the stuff was cleared out, and I began medicating. His fins are shotty looking, and he's very skinny. I fear it's too late, but I'll hope for the best. I'm using melafix to start, and I may also use a bit of metranidazole in the food.

Any other suggestions to entice this guy to eat or to medicate him with?

Hey guys,

I haven't posted in a while. Figured I'd snap a few pics of my tank and post them. No real issues as of late other than some possible hydroids. (See pics below). It'd be a big help if somebody could ID them and give some possible solutions if they are an issue. Otherwise, enjoy. Thanks

Brains!! These guys are making a comeback as well. Got them from a reefer that couldn't care for them.

Hydroids are tough to get rid of, and that looks like you've got them at the base of your reef. I have some in my reef here and there, but they've never spread nor caused problems.

If you can get that rock out, scraping off every trace of them is probably the only way to eliminate them.

Thanks for all the pictures. Your livestock is colorful and fluffy.

:eek1: OH NO!!!! First off...your tank looks great!!

Unfortunately, I see a Green Hairy Mushroom?!? IMO...unless you want half your tank enveloped by the Hairy Mushrooms...sell it. I have a GHM that started out the size of a quarter in my 55 and 3 years later it is the size of a basket ball...its quite a sight. It will become a monster and could start to eat small unsuspecting fish and shrimp.

Good luck and have fun and welcome to the 55 club!

I've actually had those mushrooms for years. I had the hardest time getting them to grow for a while, but they've taken off lately. I've been keeping an eye on them, but so far, they don't appear to be a threat IMHO. I would like to know how to get rid of some of that dang anthelia. That weed has taken over as you can see.

That's what I was afraid of. Some of it is hooked in pretty good. I've used a razor blade to remove some of it, but it always comes back in full force. I just do my best now to keep it confined to where it is.

Hey guys. I've got the top off kit in the picture below. I walked into my tank room the other night to hear my return pump sucking air. I unplugged my top off kit and pulled it off of my system to find bare wire leading into the main float switch (it has a back up switch in the event of an overfill). I'm assuming that the main switch has been shorted out. Do you think by looking at the unit that there's any way to replace the switch and have the system function properly. I'm not very electrically inclined, so I need some guidance here.

I'm not sure how the wire cover was destroyed. I'm assuming that it happened at the manufacturer as there's nothing that I can see in my sump that would bother it. Thanks.

After you all answer my question above, you can enjoy some of my free-lance photo work. The first ones are from the St. Louis Zoo, the others are from various places in Chicago. i.e. Shedd Aquarium, Chicago Architectural Cruise, etc. etc. Hope you enjoy.

The float switch is easily replaced. I'd have to see a picture or two of the area in question, but it sounds like the main unit is still fine and just that component needs replacing.

Great pictures! Thanks for sharing.

Nice working on setting up your tank!
I just read the entire thread.

Did you ever put the CB Shrimp in your tank.
I would avoid putting him in there with your other shrimp as well.

And nice zoo pics btw! ;)

Nope. Sold the shrimp with some other items to a fellow reefer.

Thanks for the compliments everyone.

Melev, I'll get some pics of my top off unit up tomorrow and hopefully you can guide me through.

Thanks!
