My 55 gallon reef project

Well..........shucks. I came home today to another loss. One of my new clowns died in quarantine. Not sure the cause. Ate well yesterday, actively swimming. I found it stuck to the back of the powerhead in the QT tank today. It's just a mini jet, so not enough suction to trap it. It must have died and then got sucked into it. Not sure if the other clown killed it or not.

Water params checked so far:

salinity 35 ppm
pH 8.3
Temp 77

More to come.

Not what I wanted to come home to.

Ammonia came back with a minimal reading. Probably from the dead fish.

I changed out a gallon of water (tank has less than 10 in it).
Other clown seems totally fine, and ate very well.

Should I try again with another, or wait and get this one in the display before trying again?

Also, if I try again, should I buy a True Perc or an Ocellaris since chances are I won't find another Misbar.

Unless this clown is about to be out of the quarantine period (21 days?), I would pick up another clown now so they can work out their differences.

My preference is True Percula, over Ocellaris.

Tank looks great! Sorry to read about your clowns! I also have a 55g that I am hoping to slowly add stuff too...frogspawn, anemones, maybe some light coral...Ill definitely keep reading!

Actually I would have to say that the clown you do have is an Amphiprion percula not a Amphiprion ocellaris. This is because, the clown you have is much more yellow than the typical coloration of Amphiprion ocellaris, as they are typically a much deeper orange.

So from that I would def. say go a head and get another clown, which my end up being the smart thing to do anyway. If you get them to pair up in q/t you won't have to deal with the possible stress they will put on one another from getting into their 'pairing' fights. And sometimes these fights can be stressful for the fish, and can give the possibility for sickness; a portal for Ich. This is something that you def. want to keep in the q/t as getting in the display system, is a real PITA.

EDIT: Your Entacmaea quadricolor (in this case, a RBTA), looks pretty healthy. The only think I am noticing however, is that it is slightly bleached. Which, with a healthy tank, and stable parameters, should not pose a problem bringing it back to its full health. This means feeding it regularly, and making sure that it is always comfortable.

Yeah I know. It's just the fact that I've got one LFS, and I've now lost a fish from there. I don't know if I trust it enough to go back.

I mean it's only $20 for a new one, but I want a healthy one!!!
The only have a 7 day guarantee, which is better than some, but still. My tanks are good enough to keep a sick fish alive for a week.

I guess we'll see.

Well, you are lucky. I got mine from a local reefer for $50 and it wasn't big, and that was 50-70% cheaper than what I would have paid for one at a club sponsor.

That's no fun. I may try one more from my LFS, but after that I'll go elsewhere. I guess I'm currently 2 for 3 with fish from there. My mandarin goby came from there, and it's done fine for a few months now (now that it's fattened up), so maybe one more chance.

It's hard to blame the LFS. All they do is get them in and sell them out. They really do not get to hand pick what they receive. To get a 7 day guarantee is pretty damn good from an LFS. We get zilch here.

This is true for most stores. However, up by me, the two most expensive, an much higher end stores offer a guarantee, and they do hand pick their live stock from the distributor. But most do not get to see exactly what they are being shipped before its ordered and it arrives. However, most club sponsors do offer some kind of guarantee in my area...

I don't neccessarily blame the LFS, other than their tank conditions may be in question. I can't test their parameters, but most of their fish typically look good. Coral tanks look like crap, but fish look pretty good. I would say I'll give it one more shot.

Thanks for the support guys.

The two families of clowns don't really seem to mind being together. I've had an True and a False Perc together for about 5 years, even laying eggs together. I don't think it matters if they have their bars or not, as that is mainly just a look more than physical need.

Sounds good. Can you say that about any other species of clown interbreeding. Aren't almost all clowns (but maroons) from the genus Amphiprion? What makes false and true percs not mind mating?

You are asking more than I know in that particular subject. What I've learned has been from presentations as well as from observing my own livestock. Daphne Fautin wrote a very good book about Anemone Fish and it might contain those answers.

I see. As long as it's common in percs and false percs, I'll attempt to find a true perc to match up with the mut that i have. :)
