My 55 gallon reef project

Thanks! Life is very crappy during study time for this thing. 9 hours of work per day followed by 4-5 hours of studying for roughly a month for each part. It's such a relief when that passing grade shows up.

Definitely need the good Lord's help to get through these!

just be glad you aren't in cooking school. Starts at 6 am, cooking and labs all day, ends at 3pm. Then off to work from 4 - midnight, at which time you get to do your homework, or smoke pot and play b-ball with the brothers in South City...

Not that I would know about that!

I would see if you can rotate the rock in such a way that the anemone gets more light. He isn't looking too happy. If that continues to happen, and its starts to go more white, start running serious amounts of carbon, turn the rock over, and feed it.

I agree with pink floyd. The anemone has the ability to move. If it wants more light, it will go.

First of all, it's only the third day in the tank. Secondly, it's sticky, its mouth is closed up tight, it readily accepts food, and it's open all day.

I think it's doing ok. There's still plenty of color in it's shaft and tentacles. It's a bit light around the mouth, but beyond that, I think it's doing ok.

I will continue posting pics over the next days/weeks documenting its progress.

Thanks for the concerns/comments everyone.

Oddly enough, I considered culinary school before deciding to become a public accountant. The hours are what scared me off.

Also, I used your vitamin soaked shrimp idea today. The nem was reaching for it before I got close to it. Gobbled it right up.

Should I continue offering a bit of food directly every day for a while?

Of course it has the ability to move. But from personal experience, I picked up a RBTA from a reefer that was under T5's, and went into my tank that has a 250W MH on it, and it did not come out for about a week, and started to seriously bleach...

I see what your saying.

In my case, the nem is definitely out in the light all day. It is bending around the rock to catch the light. I'll try to get some detailed pics posted today of its positioning and such.

You can't assess a nem situation based on your own experience Dave. They all act differently. I have had mine not come out for a week after changing lamps. Mine hide every night inside the rockwork, except for the PLTA, which appears to be retarded.

You were right about the hours dude...that's why I told my Chef on graduation day that I was going to do something else.

If the RBTA is eating, then I am certain it will be fine. Do not try to feed it every day. That will over-load it and possibly cause it to split before it's had a chance to get acclimated to your system. For an ailing nem, about every 3 days. For a healthy nem, maybe once every two weeks.

We all have different ways of doing this, but your fish will feed it too, and it will grab food out of the water column. In the case of acclimation, I would feed it some shrimp every 3 days., for maybe 1 month. Then taper off and let your fish do most of the work.

Thanks jnarowe.

Here are some pics from this morning. Very bubbly. We like bubbly

I also have an electrical question. I use a shot light ballast to light my phyto culture. I bulb will light, but not when the timer kicks on. I have to wiggle it around to make a good connection. I've tried bending the clips in on the sockets to make a stronger connection, but it still doesn't work.

Any suggestions.

It might be best to get a new shop light if you don't see any obvious problems in the current one. They are built cheaply, and maybe you've got one that needs replacing.

It may be from the position too. When you go to get a different one, pick up some anti-oxidant. That will help you get better connections.

I'm leaving for 3 days. I'm assuming it'll be better to leave the light on the phyto than off right?

I didn't have time to replace the ballast today.

I would put the Phyto on a window sill so it gets daily sunlight and then night time darkness while you are out of town. Just don't have it so close that the cold window chills the algae.

good idea, or maybe under a skylight if you have one? Marc, what are the odds it will crash while he's gone?

With light for 72 hours straight? I wouldn't expect it to do well. Photosynthesis relies on a period of darkness, and after a certain amount of hours, growth stops cold.

hmmmm...there is the camp that puts their fuges on 24/7 though, although I don't personally subscribe to that.
