hello everyone i thought i would take this time to introduce my self and my tank I am 14 years old and am current in my second semester of high school My tank is roughly 1 year old now the way it is currently set up i had it as a 55 gallon tank for almost 2 years but then i had a terrible crash one day when my brother who is only 7 at the time decided to dump 3 bottles of drinking water into the tank seeing as the water level was alittle low in the sump im sure most of you figered out by now that im going to tell you i had a tank crash well i did and it wasnt a non intensit one either i didnt notice what he had doe until it was too late and way i lost about 40 corals and was only able to save about 10 of them and some were in such bad shape they arnt doing well in this tank either The tank is lighhted by 2 SE 400w 20K metal halides Okay well enoguh talk if you have any questions feel free to ask them im also very open to suggestions as i want to eventually be able to have a fantastic tank just like the tank of the months that i always see on here anyhow here are the pics

hey everyone so for the huge photos and the not to good ones as well but im young i think ill learn anyways any comments and creasium is aprrecitated and taken with a grain of salt(water the is) lol :D

looks really good man. I am also a young reefer 14 turning 15 in a couple of months. I love this hobby as a young one and i think its a great thing to do and i will be doing the for the rest of my life. I am setting up a 90 so by the time we are older maybe we will have the experience to very big tanks. Also maybe the money would be as big as an issue. LOL. Great tank.

reeftanks6- thanks for the reply and i am alos turing 15 in a couple of months and i agree completely the whole money thing is a must and i dont have the time to get a job between rep hockey and karate as a black belt and teacher on some nights dosnt leave me with alot of time cant wait to see your tank and also once again thanks for the complement and also about the big tank i had the chance a couple of monhs back to set up a 220 gallon reef tank but due to my recent crash my mom didnt want me to start a tank tht size because it would have been almost 5 times the amount of money i spent setting the 75gallon again only 20 gallon upgrade not a 165 gallon upgrade just wondering if it was ur tank is there anything that you would add to the tank like rock or anything liek that

good job. one suggestion i would make is a backround for the tank to hide the hoses and wires. You can paint it, use window tint film or even a premade backround. i think it enhances the overall look of the tank and adds some color contrast. just a thought. keep up the good work.

thanks for the suggestion i have adctually been wondering abut that for some time now i think i will have to look into what to do with the back

Zack

thank you for the completment yes the framing is around the tank for some reason the 75 is shorter then what the old 55 use to be so the frame is a little bigger up top then on the sides but i think it finishes it off nicey either way yet again thank you for the completment

Zack P.S. ill be sure to update this thread ever time something is added or something is moved around drastically

Your tank looks good, but I think you need to add a lot more live rock to fill it out. You've got some nice corals in there, but adding more live rock would help with your natural filtration, and it would make the tank look a lot nicer. Just my two cents. Good luck, and it's great to hear that someone your age is getting into this hobby... Right on man!

Thanks Jova i have been wondering about the rock for a while i was told on other sites and by some pros (not big als if you kno who they are) that eggcrate is just as good if not better then rock at sometimes i have tons of eggcrate in my sump and it is full of tons feather dusters and many other creatures (i mean like 1000 feather dusters and tons of other items) im leaning towards the rock and well im not sure how to add it without going threw another cycle which i dont want to do so any ideas on how to do this thanks

You know I think if you keep the bio load low, you can get away with less LR. I really like the look of less myself. I do not keep a heck of a lot of rock in my tank either...JMO though.

If you add more, just do it slowly and add cured LR. You may want to put it in a separate container for a week or two with a heater and powerhead to make sure its fully cured though. Like a rubbermaid or bucket. I have never had a problem adding new CURED LR to my tanks though.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply i agree i liek the look of less myself as well but i was thinking maybe 1 more piece down the road for more coral placement you kno more room more corals more use for the 800watts of light over the tank

Nice job! I have to say that it is awesome to see young people interested in this hobby. My son is 2.5 and is very involved with the tank. He and I take our weekly trip to the LFS to check things out it’s a great bonding experience for us. The fact that there are 2 14yo students with their own reef tanks makes me feel very good about the future of this hobby as well as the future of our reefs. The better informed our young people are and the more involved they become in conservation and education of our natural resources the better this planet and our futures will be.

So from an older reefer, thank you for your interest and passion for this hobby, I hope it does carry both of your through many years to come!
