My 8mth old 250g Reef Tank

Just curious, but how large were most of those corals when you put them in? Not to be skeptical, but most of those corals seem awefully large to be grown from frags in only a matter of months....

Regardless, your tank is very nice! Great aquascaping...nice variety of colors.

Let me make sure I understand your lighting. You are running a combo of MH and T5 right?

What brand and what "flavor" of T5's are you using? I am thinking of going this route on my next setup as I currently have T5's.

I love the Miratus buttefly! Just gorgeous! How does it behave in your aquarium? I am very much interested in butterflies so I'd love to learn as much as I can.

8 months, awesome scared to see it in 2 or more yrs.

All I can say is beautiful, you give me something to look forward too.

I love the butterfly. I want one bad.

an update on the mitratus....

I've since sold the fish to a fellow-reefer after the fish started nipping at all my SPS... it didn't cause any permanent damage but I didn't hang around for it to do some... hence the only way was to catch it and let someone else have it... I missed the fish... :(

WOW! that is great growth!!! You have to be proud of yourself as the water quality is perfect in your tank by how your corals react. Not many people can do that.

Is your flow pretty strong? Also, what kind of sand did you use and is it a problem with your flow?

Hi invicible569,

allow me to say that it is indeed my honour to receive such kind compliments from you as you're one of the people I respect and admire for your success in keeping SPS corals... :)

The tank's water aint as perfect as it seems, I'm constantly battling nuisance algae with an array of methods like scrubbing the rocks, deploying TLF phosban in excessive amounts and Salifert's PO4 eliminator... I also clean my filter wool every 3-4 days and stir the sand often to try to keep the nutrients and po4 down...

Gladly, some of the corals responded by having superb growth, a colony of staghorn which grew about 5-6 inches in about 8 months was removed as the body was predominantly brown.... :(

I estimated to have more than 50,000L/hr water movement in my tank through a combination of my Sequence Hammerhead return pump, 4 tunzes and 3 maxijets... :)

Am using normal beach sand and since all my tunzes are placed closer to the front glass panel directed to the centre of the tank, the sand doesn't get stirred much by the flow... :)

One last question.. what are your water parameters set at?

The tank's water parameters:

SG: 1.025
NO2, NO3 : Undetectable
PO4 : Below 0.03ppm (cant really read the colour even though I'm using Deltec's High Sensitivity po4 testkit)
Temp : 26.2 ~ 27.2 degrees celsius
Mg : 1350ppm
Ca : 380 ~ 400ppm
Alk : 8.0 ~ 9.6 dkh

Hi Horace,

I have a combination of colonies and frags... I try to buy as many nice large colonies as possible as I tink the tank wouldn't look impressive with small colonies...

The small frags come from fellow-reefers here in Singapore where we often swap frags to ensure that the species would not be lost if our tanks suffer any mishaps... kind of like an insurance plan... :D

Thanks for the kind words!! :)

Yes, I use a combination of MH and T5s... :)

Currently, I prefer ATI T5 tubes as they seem to be brighter than all the other tubes I've tried... I use an icecap 660 to overdrive the tubes and so far, the ATIs have been holding out well against the overdrive! :)
