My Adventure In Eradicating AEFW

Atomikk

SPS OG
So, a quick backstory on how I obtained them:

About 2.5 years ago, I decided to help a fellow reefer out as he was having issues with his corals. I took a look and thought it could be either red bugs or phosphates. Never even thought about looking for AEFW (since I never had them or understood what they really were).

My beautiful reef turned into a dead zone. Colony after colony was thrown out. I was losing hope. I didn't know what to do aside for the dip-dip-dip method. Of note, having a 320 gallon display wasn't so practical for that dip method.

So I went with the Levamisole in-tank treatment. That went well for the most part. I did 4 treatments as advertised, and things looked great. I didn't see one AEFW for months. Then about 4 months ago, I saw a few on a tricolor acro. Then a few more on A. multiacuta, and more on a A. humilis.

That was what broke my back. I need a method that ELIMINATED them with certainty and not some band aid aproach that is going to lead me to nowhere.

So here is what I plan on setting up (for the last time I hope):

1. 30 Gal QT
2. 1 MH Pendant
3. Maxi Jet Powerhead
4. 1 Heater (if necessary)
5. 2 Cleaner Shrimp
6. Continuous water change
7. Zeovit Flatworm Stop

The idea is very simple, keep the display SPS-less for 5-6 months to guarantee that there were no AEFW left behind to repopulate. The 30 gal tank will serve as a tank that will be very stable for SPS to grow and continue life while being treated with the Zeovit Flatworm Stop. The cleaner shrimp are going to be there to eat those worms/eggs which are visible. I have experimented with cleaners before where they ate a rock full of porites flatworms. So I have a feeling that they are going to expedite the elimination of these pests even further.

I am going to post some pics in this thread to show what I am dealing with. Maybe someone can benefit from this and not go through 2 years of pain with these pests. :artist:

Vlad,
i wish you luck. went through this disaster couple of years ago i know how you feel. only and only method to eliminate them 100% to run DT acro free for some month.
i dont beilve other 100% eliminating those busters

mike

that is what happen to me and i had to run my DT for a year to make sure setup a complete isolation tank (QT) where i place my corals after dip and continue till I see none then and only then can they go to the main tank..2 months unless they are clean when i get them and treated for a month with the coral dip then check over again for eggs ..tedious yes but i will not risk going thru that aefw war again.goodluck buddy

Prazi? I've treated with it before, in my reef with no ill effects (skimmer goes nuts). I haven't confirmed for sure whether or not it kills AEFW. I do it as a precautionary dip though before I add corals along with the bayer dip.

Thanks for the tip tcmfish but I want to be dfinitive in eliminating in my tank. I think the QT method is the only sure thing right now.

Pics of the QT setup coming soon..

Vlad I feel your pain - been there, done that. My system was wiped out in 2010. If doing a shrimp idea my understanding is the camel shrimp will irradicate them very quickly in a QT but be careful not to leave the coral in with them too long or they will eat it too. I have also heard stories about peppermints in a QT working well also. Anyway good luck.
