My ATI Essentials driven 8ft SPS tank.

It's in Canada now, been using it on my tank for about 6 weeks now. So far very positive results, really happy with the switch.

Brett,

we need some updated pics. very healthy/happy acros
I just ordered the ATI bundle to try out on one of my tanks.
I hope the ati DP-6 doser will be reliable.

OK, you said 750ml a DAY of 3 part ATI essentials??? Is this accurate? A 1000ml bottle is $35 USD, that would be a house mortgage each month to avoid water changes...

I've been using ATI Essentials since, roughly July-ish, but I have a very small amount of corals, actually just 1 coral, so my dosing amount is very small, 8ml of part 1 and 2. Part 3 is on hold as for some reason my pump dumped 500ml into the tank, and if that was going to happen, I'm glad it happened with part 3, and not part 1...but we're close to part 1 and 2 being at the level of part 3, and once that happens, will start dosing all 3 in equal parts again.

I recently changed my lighting from LED to a 6x80W T5 system (4 blue+, 1 coral+, 1 Purple+). I may swap out the purple plus for an actinic, but we'll see. I haven't heard anyone give a strong opinion either way on it.

I've been battling algae problems, so I sent in an ICP to ATI, and shockingly came back at 89% (few times got an 89 on the first test in school, so I was happy). I was low in Iodine, Vanadium and Manganese, all 3 elements dosed in part 3, and I haven't been dosing part 3, so that kind of explains that. I got the supplements and added them as per ATI instructions. I've also done 1 30gallon water change, and will do another 30 gallon change in hopes to drop nitrates down some (11.38ppm per ATI), and with the phosphate levels (0.06 per Hanna) kick start my Algae scrubber into action.

Long story short, a buddy of mine has an SPS tank, similar to yours, but only 75 gallon. It's why I got into the hobby, and once I get this algae issue under control, plan is no more water changes, except maybe 10% a month, and get this thing full of SPS corals.

Love the tank!

Zachtos keep in mind the 1000ml bottle is diluted to make 10L of solution. This means a set of Essentials would last him 2 weeks.

OK, so about $80/mo, $1200/year with tests, dosing etc. Not cheaper than water changes, but saves time... maybe worthwhile.

I'm planning to do CaRx with masterflex pump to regulate Ca/Alk and then do ATI ICP testing 2-3 month intervals, and dose elements as needed, but not use the ATI essentials as I don't want the Ca/Alk. Especially don't want to spend $600 on Apex dosers when I have a $1000 CaRx system working just fine. I estimate for my 300G reef based on his estimated usage:
$1200/yr = ATI essentials and bi-monthly ICP + $600 setup for dosers
$600/yr = CaRx w/ ATI elements ($200 allowance) and bi-monthly ICP
$500/yr = Water changes 10% / week (with waste water cost/resin etc)

I'm not sure which way is best, but think they all follow same concept, replenish trace elements. I have no issue with nutrients, so I think water changes are kind of wasteful.

Keep in mind this is a large heavy SPS reef, most people are not using 750ml.

$600 is far more than you need to spend on dosing pumps, our 6 head is only $199.

True, I suppose if I had that many SPS I should be making a bit of money on frag sales. DOS from APEX are costly yes. I'm personally going to try and stick with my $1000+ worth of CaRx gear and try ATI elements + ATI ICP testing.

For what it is worth I know some people are running CaRx with Essentials. Since Essentials contains so many trace elements, using them together can reduce your cost of Essentials while still reaping the benefits of all the trace elements.
