I get a lot of PMs about what fish is on my avatar, so I figured I would make a thread about it.
The fish on my avatar is a Gulf Signal Blenny, or Emblemaria hypacanthus. While it looks similar to the Atlantic Sailfin Blenny (Emblemaria pandionis), E. hypacanthus is found in the Gulf of California in the Pacific Ocean, while E. pandionis is found in the Caribbean Sea in the Atlantic Ocean. I do not believe E. hypacanthus is found in the aquarium trade any more, but I think they made a brief appearance a decade or two ago. E. hypacanthus also lives in cooler waters than E. pandionis. The Gulf of California gets down to 61F in the winter, and up to 75F in the summer. E. pandionis lives in the Caribbean Sea, where the temperatures go between 70F and 79F from winter to summer.
I hope this helped clear up some confusion between the Gulf Signal Blenny and the Atlantic Sailfin Blenny, because people sometimes get them confused because they are so similar.
