My Berghia Verrucicornis Nudibranch Breeding Tank Log *pics*

Thanks for the info! Very interesting! How did we confuse them with the Berghia? So are you saying that there are now 2 known species that feed exclusively on Aiptasia? Or does an actual Berghia not eat it at all?
They are two distinct species, both of which eat Aiptasia. A. stephanieae is restricted to the keys and and Berghia is a temperate species. When Dr. Kempf first started working with the slugs about 15 years ago, Berghia was the closest thing taxonomists had to his slugs, so they were just lumped in with them. The name A. stephanieae is only about a month old.

This kind of thing is actually pretty common in taxonomy. Take for example, lettuce slugs. It's highly likely there are several species (some have planktonic larvae and some have direct developing larvae); however no one has done a study to reclassify them so right now they are all lumped together under the name Elysia crispata.

GB- Thanks for the clarification. It can all get quite confusing. I'm glad to have someone like you around to clear these things up.

Travis - Like I said, my LFS has a ton of Aiptasia throughout its tanks and fuges which he just gives to me. But even still, if the Berghia continue to eat like they are now I will eventually get in trouble. For now I'm ok.

that is so ironic to hear, that you are running low on aptasia, and you have to get some more. that just made me chuckle!! good to hear everything is going good.

Yeah tell me about it. "My Aiptasia is disappearing....OMG...I gotta get a lot more....and quick" Never thought i'd EVER say that.

Sorry no pics yet. I will try to get some posted tonight. I hope you guys can see the difference in size since I first got them. Some of them have literally doubled in size.

Sorry guys.....I been very busy lately and haven't even really had time to surf around RC (which I love to do on a daily basis). One of the schools around here that I do work for has asked me to re-vamp their 150g reef tank that is currently a disgrace and an eyesore sitting in the main lobby. It basically sat for a year with little to no maintenance. So, the last couple weeks I've been preparing whats going to be a huge undertaking. I'll be making some good money and it will be ongoing with a weekly maintenance contract. So, between that, my tanks, work, and just finding out that I am going to be having my first child I have been pretty busy.

Anyway, things are changing with the Berghia tank. I am in the process of working out a deal with my local LFS. The owner who is also a friend of mine has been begging me to get his hands on my Berghia. So, what we may do is move the operation to the store. I'll keep you all updated on that aspect as it unfolds.

As of now, nothing is really changing other than the fact that the Berghia have almost doubled in size since I got them. They are eating like crazy and my supply of Aiptasia is dwindling. I know a bunch of eggs have hatched and I have seen some tiny tiny creatures which I think my be the young (but I'm not sure) walking around. Other then that I am just waiting and trying to keep these guys fed. It is so hard for me to get pics now because the holding tank inside the main tank (see original pics) is drilled with tiny holes which makes it a PIA to get a good shot. Also, that tank now has algae growing on it (not horribly bad) which makes it all the more difficult. So, once I make the move to the LFS I'll be albe to better document the progress.

In a nut shell, everything is going well and I think that the move to the LFS will make everything much easier. I promise as things change and my life calms down a bit I will be back on here with daily updates.

congratulations on the baby, that will really throw a monkey wrench into things. Looking forward to some updated pictures.

Thanks Lordhelmet! Yeah, I guess I gotta grow up now. 35 seems like a good age to grow up and get responsible :). And yes, I want to get some pictures of just the size of these guys now. Like I said, when I move everything to the LFS I'll be able to get a ton of new, clear shots. I know I've been slackin' but really nothing has changed all that much.

This is a very interesting thread. I have been fighting Aiptasia for a while now and want to try a couple of these guys

Sulp how is the nudibranch breeding going? I would love to know how yours is doing after several months. And buy some nudibranchs from you if you have any for sale, I have aiptasia that needs eating!

How is your ingenious well thought out system going?

Were you able to keep a large enough supply of aiptasia to breed aiptasia to mating size?

Where is the cool picture your dad was going to get?

Just read the whole thread, and the ending is a bit dissapointing!

LOL, I was hoping for a better conclusion to this thread!!

I have an ingenious and totally seat of the pants system
for aptasia I am bringing online today. :)

I've got some cool action pictures here:

I made a video of the innerworkings of the egg swirl
on this page with some other pics.
