Check out Inland Aquatics and C-Quest (you'll have to go through a dealer for these), Rod's fish trace their lineage through Morgan at IA and originally Bill Addison at C-Quest. The fish from either of these sources shouldn't be any different than Rod's (other than Rod's juvies having the strong reddish coloration from their diet).
To my knowledge, Rod hasn't done anything to "fix" the strain beyond what he initially purchased from Morgan at IA.
Anyone feel free to chime in and correct me if you have information that contradicts the above.

those two suppliers have onyx?
i have never seen them deliver an onyx to a member on this or any board in the last couple years at least. If c-quest was selling onyx dont you think someone on this board would mention it or own one?
i wish there was a place to buy onyx from but i only see nice Wild caughts and rods in the places i hang out.

There are quite a few other sources of onyx than Rod, and many of them have the same lineage.
I actually have a friend that bought two onyx from C-Quest through a local dealer last week. He sent me some (horrible) photos of them. I'll post them in a few minutes and ask him to take some better pictures if he can.
There's another breeder in the IL area that has spawning onyx (purchased from Rod), but he won't ship the juvies.
I would think that Morgan at IA would send you pictures of his onyx if you ask. I've never seen any in person. He had juvies, adults, and spawning pairs last time I checked, but they're pricey.
Also, Sustainable Aquatics has the SA Onyx that are not descendants of C-Quest and don't have the same black development as the C-Quest line IMO.
And Nepthea - sorry about the hijack, I do hope this is answering your original question on where to find more onyx.
I'll post the c-quest fish pictures shortly.

I apologize for the poor photos. These were what was sent to me - I've cropped and resized, but that's about all I can do. They're slightly better than not posting anything.
These seem to be tracking pretty close to Rod's fish at this age (based on size and complete lack of tail bar development). They're not showing the red coloration of Rod's fish due to their diet. These fish are tiny.
C-Quest does not growout under halides like Rod. It's theorized that bright light plays a role in the development of black pigment in percs, so exposing them to halides may increase the development of black coloration in these fish.
As I mentioned, Rod's fish are direct descendants of C-Quest's onyx, and from my research, at this point I don't believe that either Rod or Morgan refined the onyx beyond what C-Quest has already done. If anyone has contradictory information, please share it.
I'm trading a picasso for one of these in a few weeks, at which point I'll take some good photos with my DSLR. For now, this will have to do.
