My Blue Ribbon Eel eats! (pics and videos)

Combination of a couple things. I wanted to feed him while he showed interest and since he made a meal of my goby which is quite a bit larger than the guppies I assumed he would be able to take down several guppies without a problem.
At the end of the video you can see that he isn't as excited about the food, I think he was getting full. I don't force feed so I figured that when he had enough he would stop eating which is essentially what he did.
My next challenge is to get him to eat frozen food but that can take some time.

Yes he still eats like a champ. The only thing I've noticed in the last couple months is that his color has faded. Instead of being an intense blue he is more of a gray/blue. I keep trying different foods but he really like frozen silversides. I would like to find out if I need to add vitamins or something.

One other thing I would like to mention. He is very reef friendly and never went after any of the fish until the other day. My midas blenny jumped and luckily my girlfriend found him just in time and put him back in the tank. The blenny was still alive but in terrible shock. The eel was very interested in the blenny and before I knew it the blenny was gone. I think the eel saw a feeding opportunity. Oh well.

It sounds like from the previous posts that he occasionally will go after gobies too. The eel itself as it matures will start to turn completely yellow. Maybe that is where it is at in its life? Do you have any mandarins that he has gone after?

Nice reading all these posts about the BR eel. Oddly enough, I never had any problems getting mine to eat. I'd just throw in some feeder goldfish (as much for the elegance coral as the eel), he'd sense a fish in distress, come out and snatch up one or two.

I think of all the occupants of my tanks, the BR was the most beautiful and perhaps my favorite.

Love the idea of the eel tubes, might steal that someday. Ever any problems with other inhabitants getting lost in the tube system? Brittle stars, etc?

Feeder goldfish can lead to liver failure, just a heads up.

listen to this article! I jsut bought one and got him eating silver sides in three days with this method hes eating like a champ!

Beautiful eel. I love the pic of the two eels having a stare down.

I really like those tiny orange stars. Do you know what they are and if they stay that small?

As usual, an awesome thread Santa Monica. Did you have the turf scrubber on this tank back in 2007, when you got the BR?

I believe these are Orange Linkia Stars, but not 100% positive. Someone else with better knowledge should chime in soon.

wanted to bump this thread. all the videos are gone and that makes me sad. lol i might be getting a BR tonight when i get one in at work. So I was doing some reading up on how to care better for them.

I've been considering getting one for my redo tank. I was wondering if anyone had an ribbon eel that ate other fish in the tank. Especially gobies, mandarins and leopard wrasses. I had one previously but it jumped out of a tiny hole where the power cord was (which has been fixed) so I never got to keep it long enough for it to get acclimated enough to try eating any of my smaller fish.

Mine tried, and did. I think he ate a flame hawk, and I saw him eat a sand sifting goby, and some other small narrow fish which I can't remember. He tried to pull a yellow tang into his pipe but it would not fit, and he tried a garden eel but could not pull it out of the sand.

Anything small is probably going to be tried when he is hungry. It would take a silverside per day to keep him full though.
