My Blue Ribbon Eel eats! (pics and videos)

Speaking for myself i have multiple tangs in my tank along with the eels. I dont have any problems. I target feed the eels so they dont miss out on dinner and it works very well.
I do have alot of rock in my tank and the eels can hide themselves in it rather well. I guess you can say its more like 3 rock piles and the eels inhabit 2 of them. Im going to be getting another ribbon next week. Im also curious if they will develope a pair. I just traded a large Vlamingi Tang for that and a Mystery Wrasse :) After seeing that website it became an inspiration to me to add another ribbon. I dont think ill have 5 though LOL
I tried my hand a breeding seahorses (Reidi) over a year ago. The longest i kept a fry alive was 4 months. Ill have to look around and see if i can find my video i took of papa giving birth. www.seahorse.org is a great site for information on horses. :)

For those of you about to embark on owning a ribbon eel please post updates on them and collectively we can all get them to eat if any one of you is having a hard time getting them to eat.

Does anyone know the species of the green eel pictured in the German link? I tried to get a translation, but Babel fish isn't exactly the best, and it tends ot leave out chunks of info.

I am a bit confused as to the eels gender and coloration changes (?) Could someone fill me in?

Thank you,

The snake-eel is not further identified on the website. It is not a moray, rather a member of a larger group of eels rarely seen available. Most are reputed to be very aggressive and reach a large size, but experience is lacking, so.....

The blue ribbon eel goes through a series of colour changes, starting with black for the immature fish. Blue is the intermediate stage for males, while yellow is the final stage for adult females. That said, there are records of the fish changing back to a previous colour, which may be in response to balancing the sexes in a harem community. Not uncommon in the seas.

My eel was purchased black and has changed over to blue after about 6 months in the aquarium. I have seen various shades of blue, as well, ranging from intense powder blue to deep electric blue. This may be genetic, environmental or age related. I have no idea.

I believe the green Eel is a Wolf Eel. I have no clue about the other one pictured.
Im wondering if when i get my second ribbon if they will become a pair. Anyone ever hear of ribbon eels breeding in captivity?

Great thread. Thanks for posting the pics and videos. I'm amazed at how healthy everything looks. You're keeping many critters which have notorious reputations for difficulty, and you're doing it very well. Congratualtions.

Sure looks like a Wolf Eel (Congrogadus subducens):

The other one, the white one:

looks like a white ribbon eel (Pseudechidna brummeri), interesting link, also touches the blue ribbon eel topic:

I don't know about the ribbon eels breeding in captivity, but the Wolf eels do:

Interesting links honey. Thanks for posting. I should have my second Ribbon Eel Sunday or Monday. Its black and the vendor im getting it from says its eating frozen krill :)

As an update My BR went on a hunger strike for 2 days! Other than that he eats every night. I should take a few pics but ill warn everyone my photography skills are terrible! Im still waiting for my second ribbon. Im doing a trade for a large Vlamingi Tang and timing has been off on both ends.

Sea Horse??

Sea Horse??

These are fantastic pics and video! Thanks! I'm just curious - only been reef keeping (55g) 6 months, but is that a real Sea Horse I see?? If so, how in the world do you keep him in with all the other fish and he not starve?
Thanks again!

One thing I am wondering about.

It seemes like the eels do better in a feeding frenzy, and you have many different types of fish in the same tank that may encourage that. What would be some good species ot encourage this frenzied beahviour in a mostly eel tank?

Thank you,

I would say anything big enough to not be eaten by the eels. I got my second BR this week. Its been eating frozen Krill at the vendors place. It hasnt eaten anything for me yet but its only been a few days. :)

Just wanted to say that I picked up a black ribbon eel that was eating at the LFS recently. I setup the pvc system and put it in a 75 with a few active fish (wrasse and tang). It has continued to eat fine over the past two months after getting it past the two week mark. I'll try to get some pictures when I have a chance.

Any updates on keeping mulitple ribbon eels together in the same tank?

My 2 ribbons are doing great! The black one turned blue and the blue one turned black. Go figure! They co exist fine with 2 snowflake eels in my 125. I dont even have to feed them with the feeding stick as they will eat whatever blows past them. :)

i would love to keep a BR in my tank but i never installed the PVC piping under the sand bed is this something that is needed to house one or can it be done without?

Two point! Do you think having the PCV pipes in the sand did the trick? I have always stayed away from them due to reputation for not eating.

I have no PVC piping in my tank. They just take up refuge under the rockwork. Im also bare bottom. Im no expert on BRs im just telling what works for me :)
