My Blue Tort Spawned!!

NICE! I never see the cool stuff spawn like that. It's always Poccilipora or something that grows fast and is common anyway.

Keep an eye out for your little Tort-lets and keep us posted with pics.

Oh and BTW do you know yet what provoked it. I am sure it had something to do with the moon phase, but did you add anything, or do a slightly colder H2O change, play some Berry White? My snails will have happy time when I do a colder H2O change.

Would captive spawned corals be more resilient and "stronger" than captive cut corals?

I would think that they would be because they are from the same lineage.....Anyone know a definitive answer on that because that is an interesting point:reading:

Any coral either captive spawned or raised as larvae would be/is hardier, as it hasn't grown up in the ocean, but rather in your tank, and is use to those conditions. I'm pretty sure this species isn't a brooder, so unless the eggs were to be fertilized by another coral (and a different genotype at that, not a frag/clone), there is no chance of any viable larvae being produced. Nonetheless, it's very cool, congrats.

Congrats. Amazing how little we still know about the animals we keep in our tanks though. It's a reason I sit in front of my tank for hours watching I think.

Awesome. I check with a flashlight at night too. If someone told me 5 years ago that I'd be dumping vodka in my fishtank and checking for polyp extension and night critters in my reeftank, I would have told them that only nerds would do that.

Just to answer a few questions...I do have moon lights. I have fishbowl Innovations moonlights on a programmed lunar cycle. As far as parameters go, I had a major nutrient/nitrate spike about 3 months before the spawn. My daughter was born 2 months premature and was in the neonatal ICU for 3 weeks. I neglected my tank and added microbacter7 to try to extend the need for a water change (that was already past due). As my corals got more brown. I added more microbacter 7 to "fix" the problem without testing water. I was adding a spoiled batch of microbacter..yellow with chunks in it. I had a few large colonies brown out and rtn. I aslo had an alk spike up to 14 due to a solenoid problem on my calcium reactor..the perfect storm. The blue tort was a champ and had no change. I did major water changes and vacuumed the sandbed. Fixed the problem after a month. colors came back and i had to remove some large colonies and start from frags again.

I also noticed my temp was getting up to 82 degrees at the end of my light cycle. I dropped the temp by 2 degrees about 2 weeks before the spawn. It now stays at about 78 and max is 80. Sorry about the lengthy reply, but I hope these details can help figure the trigger for the spawn.

my tank is back and hummin' again. My baby daughter is doing great..btw.

Does it have anything to do with the full moon?

Yes, the moon is a main factor in almost anything spawning in the ocean, especially corals.
