All of the tanks that i use were purchased from the lfs new. No garage sale special turtle tanks or anything like that. As for the fowling of the air i guess i would be the biggest culprit as i do smoke but i don't think that is the issue as how could i explain having 3 successful tanks of little ones. I do not warm up the car in the garage either i pull them out in the morning so the fumes are not an issue.

I did take down the tank yesterday that i had the losses in and bleached everything maybe it will help, maybe not. Tomorrow will be the 9th day for the eggs in my ref and i plan to pull the tile and see what happens.

Chris- Do you think even that minute amount of fumes from the car could be affecting it? Do you have a basement you could try to move a tank into for one clutch? Just to see? Could you try to do some sort of lid or something? Very interesting... and the fry all seem to drop before meta around the same time each time?

No not at all as i said with the car i pull it out in the morning i don't warm it up in the garage with the door closed or anything like that, with the car out of the garage i would say it's a good 40' away from where the tanks are.

No basement to try out and all of the tanks have glass lids to help keep the temperature up due to their location it was 32 deg. this am here.

Yes; so far all losses are prior to meta and they seem to drop off in random numbered groups each day.

I plan to pull the tile a day early today (9th day) and see what happens. At lunch i pulled 4g of water from my reef and set-up the larvae tank.

I knew you said that u warmed ur car up outside the garage, but I meant do you think that 2 secs to start and pull out could be causing issues? However minimal. Do you have a room in ur house you could do a control group with, just to see if ur having same issues if raised in ur house?

No i don't think it's an issue at all, it's not a typical garage the structure is 20' x 30'. No other place to raise them, they are just dying in the tank, a tank that sits next to 2 other tanks that probably have 125 babies in them.

Pulled the tile last night and when i checked on them this morning i had about 30 swimmers, so i added some rot's and tinted up the water and went to work. I just checked on them at lunch and did not see any losses on the bottom, although about 8-10 of the eggs in the batch that are still on the tile and have not hatched have turned milky white, so they are gone. I hope that the rest will finish hatching tonight.

Well pulling the tile a day early ended up not working out for me, checked on them this morning and the bunch that where still on there that i had hoped would finish hatching last night turned into white mush and the bottom of the tank is now covered again in losses i counted maybe 15 swimmers this morning.

Update for me out of those 15 swimmers that i had i still have 12 of them actively chasing bbs and some left over rot's in the tank as well. Not a very good number this time around but better than the 0 that i have been dealing with as of late. They should start meta. tomorrow i think.

I just received my glass bit for drilling yesterday i plan to try and drill my first hole in a 10g tank tomorrow. I have a bunch of babies that need to be moved out of a 5g tank as they are starting to get crowded in there.

Good luck with drilling. Its pretty easy just have lots of water running for cooling and let the drill bit do the work. Don't push on it or it will break a 10g pretty easy.

Well a not so productive weekend i guess would sum up the twists of events. On Friday i attempted & failed to make my first hole in a 10g tank. Here are the tools i used:
10g tank
drill
glass drill bit
plumber's putty
water (to keep the bit & glass cool)
beer (to keep myself cool)
safety glasses (never did confirm for sure if the bottom was tempered so not a bad thing i thought)
earplugs as i was sure the sound was going to be less than pleasant.

I used the plumber's putty to build a dam around where i wanted the hole (in the middle of the tank) after that i poured water into this area to help keep the bit & glass cool.

I did not use a drill guide so getting the bit to start making the hole was a bit of a pia as it did walk around a bit but i was able to get it started close to where i wanted the hole to be. I drilled on/off for around 20 seconds at a time allowing the bit & glass to cool off in between. The mistake i made was when i stopped after the third drilling session to check and see how much further i needed to go, I guess when i placed the bit back onto the tank it was not exactly flush and when i turned on the drill (CRACK the tank in 3 places along the bottom)

i said some choice words as up to this point i thought i was doing pretty good, lol. I noticed that the water was leaking out but not at the cracks it was actually leaking from around one side of the hole. So i figured that since the tank was already a goner i might as well see how close i was, so i turned the drill back on and in just a couple of seconds i had my hole in the tank of course by now it was a mute point as the tank was already wreaked.

Here is something strange i had happen last night anyone ever see anything like this??

Due to my drilling failure i do not have any empty tanks available i was hoping to move some out of a 5g into the 10g tank that i broke but we already know what happened with that.

I do have 12 (11 day old) larvae in a 5g that are eating bbs & oto a. I had a tile in my reef with eggs on it and last night would have been the 10th night for them which is when mine hatch so i figured i would pull the tile and place it in with the other 11 day old ones, sure i might lose some or all of the newest ones if they ate bbs to soon or whatever but if i left them in the reef their fate is already doomed.

So after dinner last night i go to pull the tile and was a bit surprised to see that she had laid down new eggs already!! Some were laid right in or over the existing ones??

I checked on the eggs this morning and almost all of the new ones are gone i think the male was fanning the ones that hatched which was a full hatch and in the process the new ones did not hold on to the tile there are some that remain but not a whole bunch.

Thats pretty cool.

When drilling try not to stop. Just drill right through. You can tell how close your as the bit makes a different noise the closer you get. Well it did for me anyway. And yes I would drill against something like a piece of wood. This will stop the glass from chipping on the other side. I drill from the inside to the outside of the tank with wood under the tank which lets you put a little more pressure on the bit.....But not to much

just my experience, but when drilling glass....it's typically easier to have the drill running when you make contact w/ the glass - both when starting the 'groove' and when placing the bit back in contact with the glass after checking progress or adding water.
