My caps need help!!

ok so i thought id chime in here...

these are her first 2 SPS coral so we decided to go the easy route with montis however they do not like the tank.

we got B ionic for her tank today and dosed after seeing her calcium and alk levels. i think i told her the wrong number because when i tested it i thought it was low.

one HOB filter (the bigger one) is filled with cheato and the second one has carbon in it. her hair algae is a tiny speck but thats probably because of her phosphates. she tops off with distilled water so im not sure where the po4 is coming from.

oh and we added another powerhead in there so she has plenty of flow now...

Does the tank temp (82f) have anything to do with it? Isn't that a bit high??!!

82 is fine for temp, assuming there's no huge swing each day.

I seroiusly have no idea why my tank has lasted so long... I didn't do any dosing, all I used to do was top off and feed my fish. All of your suggestions are really helping now though. I did my first cal supp last night, and i did a water change. I'm going to test everything all over again tonight when I get home from work and see is anything improved.

I asked my bf the same question about the temp, because it does tend to get as low as 77 and when everything is on and its hot out it gets up to 82. To me thats a big jump, but i'm not sure how to change that with out having to add a bunch more mechanical things. Its not always as big of a jump as that, its always different . Alyways within those numbers though.

Temp swings of 77 to 82 is def a problem for any of the more fragile critters. Mine swings from 79 - 82 during this time a year (open windows at night - ac off) and I worry about it. The remaining time it is 79 - 80. Bring up the 77 with a heater and bring down the 82 with a clip on fan that turns on with the lights. This is not a perfect system but should be better than 5 degree swing. Then if that still does not reduce it enough then get a ranco 2 stage controller. It will turn the fan and the heater on as needed. IMHO, I think that even 2-3 degrees is to much on a continual basis.

temp swings could be a big problem. I used to set my heater to turn on at 78--it would warm the water to about 80 at night, and in the day with the lights it would go up to 82-83. too high for my caps, the browned out. Now my heater is set at 76-77 and it never turns on, but the temp stays at 79-80. weird science but whatever.

I have a green cap that had white patches in the middle, I figured out i did not have enough flow on/around them and hermits were pooping on it. I put a powerhead pretty close to blow the detritus and now the cap is colorful with great polyp extension.

I haven't used heaters in both my reef tank and freshwater tank for a year now. My temps are much more stable. However, I do have three powerheads and a 4x65W PC fixture that keeps temp between 78 - 80F everyday.

I am not sure how quick you can see some improvements.

Normally, though, in most polyped corals, if they get stressed out, it can take anywhere between 2 hours or two weeks. With that said, when my xenia and/or my finger leather both went south, I never recovered them and I let them go. Good luck on those monti's
