That site has plenty of info on breeding. Buy(or you can borrow my copy of) Clownfish by Joyce Wilkerson...still considered the breeder's standard. I know quite a bit on the topic if you'd like info.

First, where are they breeding? Is there a way to get a tile in where they nest? It is easier to take them out as eggs rather than when hatched. The first batch and sometimes first few are not going to be the healthiest. Better to get things set up and then attempt to rear the young. Besides, they spaen every 14 days under the right conditions.

Which clowns are breeding? Are they the ones I think they are (the percularis)? Can we get pictures? Get a bare-bottomed tank with no LR (no place for the babies to compete over) set up, find a good supply of rotifer type-s and phytoplankton (some culture both of these themselves). PM me if you need more info, but better to let them breed and take it slow than to rush a setup for them. Besides, the larvae are nutritious live food for the tank. They'll continue to spawn pretty regularly and you aren't going to be able to keep many of the batches anyway. You might want to think about two or three tanks so you can continue to regulate size and behavior.

Order that book earlier tonight.. ;) Im gonna let this batch go, and try and get something setup in the next week or two.

I will try and get some pics tomorrow and we can work on a plan for the next batch.

Yep, they are the percs I got from you.... ;) They have been working on cleaning a section of rock for the last couple of days and she put down a nice patch of eggs today.. pretty cool..

One is perc one is occ. The offspring will be percularis, a relatively new species designed mainly by breeders. Very few have had this combo breed and keep the offspring. From the other person I know who breeds them, his are opposite (male is perc and female is occ) and he said the only unfortunate part of his pair was that the period to MMP and development is closer to the perc, which makes it much longer and more difficult than that of the occ. Very little true accounting or studying has been done, so this could be completely opposite for your pair and the rearing may be as simple as the occ. I'd love for you to keep me posted on your outcomes and may have to pick up a few of the offspring when it comes to fruition.

Sure you can have some..

Here are a few pics I snapped last night..

All those spots of open space in the eggs is probably from the male cleaning and picking off the weaker (dying) eggs. As they continue spawning, the clutch will grow in size, density, and viability. He looks good and looks like he'll keep a good eye out. I assume they still don't hang out together? If not, the female went to the male to lay the eggs? The reason I ask is because this is the behavior I noticed very often and I always assumed he was tending eggs by his behavior. Unfortunately, I never saw the eggs because of the shrooms he tended in were overlapping and they found a good spot right in the middle of them.

Congrats again...:)

Actually they are hosting together now in the LTA. He moved over about a month ago when the RBTA split. Since then they have been together.

Im in the process of setting up to be prepaired for the next batch. Got get my rot's and plankton ready..

Will keep ya posted.

They released, or hatched or whatever it is they do last night about 11pm.. I didn't try and save any of this batch, but now I have a cycle time... 8 days..

Gonna try and get everything ready for the next batch!

New clutch of eggs where layed early this morning, and of course they choose not to lay them on the tile I placed in the tank over the area they laid the first batch, instead they cleaned a new area just below it.

O well, whatcha gonna do. Im gonna leave the tile in there and see if they take to it later.

Lets talk capture. After reading the book I understand that after hatching they will come to the surface and are attracted to a light, so Im thinking that is the best bet. Any thoughts?

I bought a submersable light that I thought about hanging just below the surface of the water and see if that would work to gather them into one spot.

Question is, should I just leave the light on or wait like two hours and then turn it on after they are in the tank.. Anyone have any experience with this?

8 days and counting, to my first rearing attempt.

Jack

That's the way to do it.

First thought, turn off skimmers and pumps the night of. You will lose most of the larvae to that if you don't.
Second, get a nice, CLEAN dish to suck them into for transport.

Just keep the light on and at a particular spot on the surface of the water. The larvae when hatched will be drawn directly toward it. What is the temperature of the breeding tank? What is the time between clutches? If you move the temp up to around 80-84 you should be able to bring their cycles to 14 days per spawn and six days from spawn for hatching. MAKE SURE THE PARAMS OF THE GROWOUT TANK ARE EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE PARENT'S.

Besides that, Wilkerson can teach you most of it. Keep a log of occurrences and photo journal it also. Always be asking questions, expecially to the RCF people...they're great at it.

Good luck and enjoy the little ones to come. Remember, keep me posted on their growth rate...I want to know if it is closer to perc or occ.

The new batch looks really good. I would say coloration is a bit more vivid and it would be safe to say there are twice as many eggs this time compaired to last.

The temp in the tank is right at 80 and at this point there cycle to spawn is 15 days. Maybe 14 depending on exactly the time they laid the eggs.

Hatch rate is 8 days, or at least it was last time, so im shooting for that mark again this time. So the 18th should be the day for this batch.

I have a small tank ready to go with water from my main tank and will put fresh water in that night. Got my phyto going, got my rots going, I think im ready!!!! LOL

Wow this sounds so exciting. Definitly do a photo journal! I would love to see it. Hearing it is just not enough, lol.
