yup, popeye! QT that sucker quick. Theres a medication for it but its eludes my memory right now. Search DrFoster.

I agree qt your clown quickly also the medication to use is Maracyn Two for SW fish treat accordingly to package instructions

What is this caused by? Now i have run into a problem, i leave wednesday for out of town, and i wont be back till the following sunday. How long untill it will kill the fish.

now, what im thinking about is im going to TRY to express it. I live about 2hours outside of dallas and theres not fish stores around.

Sorry to give you bad news, but expressing it without QT is most likely going to cause the loss of the eye and a quicker infection to the rest of your fish. Antibiotic treatment is about the only fix I know of, but the good news is that I know it works because I had the same pop-eye problem with my Koran Angel and the good folks at Texas A&M University Veterinary Hospital (shameless plug) helped me out.

Causes are typically trauma resulting in an infection that builds up behind the eye and pushes it out.

Mortality rates are pretty high without treatment and it kills pretty quickly (couple of days). Sadly, if you cannot QT and treat before Wednesday, my recommendation is euthanasia. I know, I know, many will not agree with this for ethical reasons, but the likelihood it will spread to the rest of your tank in your absence is high.

Maybe you have a friend with QT capabilities???

Sorry!!!

Years ago with I had a pair of saddlebacks, both the male and female would get pop eye once in a blue moon ( think a total of 4 times, 2 for the male, 2 for the female ). In each case all I did was step up the water changes and make sure that all the params were in check. Two a week or two, but it did get better on its own each time.

Granted, it isn't uncommon for that to happen to saddlebacks.

I have had the same experience as Todd.
I have had saddlebacks and akindynos get popeye and all it did was wait. I takes about a week to go down. My akindynos actually gets a bubble that pops out above the popeye. Looks really bad, but in a week or so it always goes back to normal.

My advice is to to leave it alone.

I recently had a clarkii that got popeye........Wilkerson's book says clarkiis and saddlebacks are especially prone to it........I just kept him well fed and isolated him in q/t and it took about two months but it got better on it's own

ok guys, well i got good news, i expressed shipped the meds and it should be here on tuesday.

So now, with the QT. i have a 3g pico with a aqua clear 20 with some filter media. How long should i keep him in there? now some of you said that i should leave it alone. is it better to???? As of now i think im going to QT him just in case.
thanks guys, and if you have any other info, please tell!!!

Reinforcing what Todd and Phil recommended:

Unilateral popeye/exophthalmia (affecting only one eye) is often the result of trauma. Left alone it will often resolve itself so, I too, would recommend you not quarantine the fish and just give it time and optimal conditions in which to recover.

Bilateral popeye is a different beast. If your fish is suffering from bilateral popeye I'd immediately remove it and begin antibiotic treatment.

Does it look like there is white membrane coming out from around the eye socket all buldged up & forcing the eye out or does the eye just look swollen?

These are 2 different problems.

The eye is only buldging out, there is not white membrain coming out at all. I just wanna be100% sure before i put her in QT. As of now, it looks the same. The Meds ( SW Maracyn Two) i got from drfosters is on its way and should be here withen the hour. So

its buldging out, no white membrain. its not pop eye?

My damsel got popeye from too many micro bubbles in the tank from the external filter. I remidied the problem and the eye healed itself.

but theres no micro bubles from my skimmer, or pumps.......
So...if theres no membrain then its not pop eye right?
