My Clowns just laid eggs.....

It's totally unexpected..... My first pair never laid eggs so far and I had them a year longer then this second pair. I found the second pair laid eggs around a colony of Yellow Star Polyps. I have no idea what I should do actually.... I've been very busy doing remodeling work around the house so it's been a disaster around the house, but I always take the time to view my tanks and that's when it caught my eyes....The pairs been tending to their eggs keeping them cleaned and such.... I know if I want to raise them I have to farm my own rotifer, in which I have no idea about. I read about them awhile back, but I dunno if I can take on another task at this moment with the house being in a uproar. But it's just so awesome to finally see them laying eggs....

Cool! I used to have a pair of tomato clowns that would lay eggs. I never tried to raise them but wish I had. If they keep laying and you don't want to raise them I wouldn't mind trying my hand at raising some of them sometime. Not right now, but maybe in a few months.

It's not cheap, The needed materials run around 200.00 just to start thinking about raising them. There is a thread that explains it all but i can't remember the link. Sorry.

Bill,

I read from a site about cultivating rotifer and how to raise the babies. I already have an extra tank on the side and air stone. But I dunno if I want to go through the process feeding around the clock every 2hrs interval. I had to do that before raising baby bunnies and parrots when parents did not care for them. It was very tiring work!!! I wonder if you can set it up with a dosing pump?

Yup, dosing pump on a timer would work just fine! I wouldnt worry about raising the first batch. Give them a few rounds to get going. Once they start the routine, they should be consistent in laying. By then, you should have your cultures ready to go. MOFIB is the website you want to check out.

Also forgot to mention this pair is picasso & onyx mix. They came from matt @ sustainable aquatics. It would be interesting to see what the out come would be like.

It's day three and I can see the babies starting to form. I've been reading a lot about raising the fry. I may have to give it a try once my house isn't in a uproar, I think it would be quite interesting thing to learn. I'll probably be dead tired by the end of it....lol

I dunno if it the time for mating or what....But my first pair of clowns, the male is really pushing her to mate. Looking at her tonight she's gotten HUGE. I guess I just watch them, but not closely enough to see how big they're getting.

It's been 7 days now so they should hatch Sunday night. I can see their eye balls forming along with their silverish body. I was denied to have buckets sitting everywhere so I can raise rotifers and brine shrimp. So I'll have to see if I can hide the buckets behind place where it won't be seen....lol Temptation to raise baby clowns.....

That's awesome Michael. Your clowns having eggs is not an easy feat. It really tells a lot of your husbandry practices and keeping your tank stable. I wouldn't worry about the larvae being eating. You will probably have another nest in about 2 weeks.

yea.. not to mention that rotifer water stinks... however, it shouldn't hard to keep rotifer somewhere not stink. lol

My clowns just laid eggs again last night....I think the female has a full belly of eggs cause her belly is huge!

WOW - they're busy little bees aren't they!

Can't you buy live rotifers (like buying live copepods or amphipods)? Or do you really have to grow your own (for freshness/quantities needed/etc.)?

Nice, Mikey! I'm jealous. :)

Check out mofib.org if you haven't already.

There's also a breeding forum here on RC that is pretty active.

The amount of rotifers you need to raise them is high cause they lay a lot of eggs. Im still busy remodeling so don't have time to raise them....
