I have 3 clams right now, deresa, maxima and a crocea. The deresa and maxima's mantels extend a little bit past the shell but my crocea's mantel extends like 1.5" past it's shell and blows around in the flow. It grows well, but is its mantel supposed to extend that far?

I want to add more flow in my tank, but im worried about the clam getting stressed.

Its maybe 8" under water. I got a new fixture 2 weeks ago, so it might get better but it used to be 8" under 2 150mh. now i have a 6 bulb t5 ATI fixture with ati bulbs so i dont think light is a factor anymore.

Here's some pics of mine:

Mine is in a spot of good flow and its mantle also blows around a little, but it does seem to mind. As long as it is doesn't look like it is about to take flight or is trying to move away then I wouldn't be too worried.

OK, im not really wories since it has grown 5-6 new scute layers in the past several months since i got it. I'm afraid to put it down on the bottom where there is lower flow. I have good lights but i would like to keep it high where it gets more of what it needs.

I see you have a thread on this in the SPS Forum and you said that you think your clam's mantle extends too far, do you have a picture? Since you have the ATI fixture, you should be able to put the clam on the sandbed without a problem.

Any update on this? I also have a blue 3" crocea that extends its mantle quite a lot (1.5" maybe) and which blows around a little. I assume it's normal. I've only had it for a month so I don't know whether it's doing well or not. It behaves normally and retracts when something passes over it. It's in the rockwork about 16" under a 150W current 14K MH bulb.

Ahem...... Hey skh, I saw a pic of your clam on the "other" web-site and it looks fine!

Can you see any new growth on the top edges of the shell? If so, that's a good sign! ;)

Hey basser, that's good advice. :) I'm seeing some white growth closest to the mantle which I take as a good sign but I just wonder about how the clam seems to be reaching for the light. Here are some pictures in its current location. (Edit - colors are kind of funny).

WOW! Compared to your other pic, it does look like it's really stretching towards the light! Can you move him up any more?

I might have to do that. The strange thing is that the clam wasn't pursing its mantle as much when it was on the sand bed, further down in the tank -- although it did stretch out horizontally quite a bit. I think the stretching may partly be due to the fact that the clam is off center from the light and is sitting at an angle.

I wonder if replacing the current 14K bulb with a Phoenix 14K would do the trick. That's supposed to be a big step up in PAR.
