dang it's my 17-yr old nephew's story all over again! my beloved nephew is lazy in school and has constantly gotten d's & f's in some major courses like spanish, english & some of the math classes (algebra especially). he's highly intelligent but thinks these classes are boring for the most part, so he doesn't even try. my brother, who is a known hard-a$$, has tried everything he can think of the motivate him: grounding from everything, taking him off his football team, not letting him drive his truck but still making him pay for the insurance on it, not letting him see his girlfriend, etc. but no luck.

to my nephew's way of thinking his dad is being a jerk. but his dad just wants him to have a better life than he himself did. he had my nephew in high school, never went to college after graduating even though he was offered a tryout on the sf 49ers & worked manual labor jobs until he just recently got accepted into the cdf & is happy there.

we're all at a loss & have practically given up on getting him to straighten up in school. the main thing i've said is that he will find his own way eventually. if he doesn't he will end up working those manual labor, dumbed down jobs that no one wants. but if he does, he has only himself to blame. sorry for the long post, but i hope that you take everyone's words to heart & get up those grades!!!! mickey d's, manual labor, not what you want to do for the rest of your life!!!

Frankly I'm surprised someone with complex hobbies can't keep good grades. Yes, there were some subjects I had zero interest in but you can still get through them in some passing degree.

If you're really into reefs, your choices now will determine whether you're going to get the 550G down the road or a 30G if you're still into this hobby in 20 years. Yeah, adulthood may seem far away but it really isn't.

If you took that much effort to research MH lighting, I would see if you can find the same type of passion to learn about chemistry, math, etc.

Good luck.

So...let me get this straight....you are failing in school and your Dad has to decide on whether or not you deserve a reef tank or a bike.........that is just messed up. Your Dad needs to crack down on you and make you realize that nothing in life is free.

I never got D's or F's... I got my a$$ beat if I got a C......and I had to buy my own bike and my own car and my own tank.

Listen kid......Don't get too excited. Life is not ALWAYS going to be handed to you on a silver platter.

Get your butt in gear and do well in school so you don't end up being a "yes man" working a crap job for no money.......

You may think that someone who gets strait A's is a dork or a nerd....but you know what.....He is the one who will be able to afford a $20,000, 1000 gallon reef tank in his $900,000 house some day.... You will be the guy who he pays $10.00 an hour to clean his pool and mow his lawn....But look on the bright side, $10.00 an hour will put gas in your crappy 1970 Pinto and if you are lucky, you will have enough money to buy your kid who gets D's and F's a bike or a fish tank.

Do your self a favor son... study, get good grades, respect those around you and take good care of those who love you and you life will be good.

ChickenCannoneer,

You rock little buddy! Keep up the good work. Maybe some day you will have the joy of paying "yamaha racer" to mow your lawn and feed your peacocks!

Your a good kid....keep it up!

LOL

The LFS.

Can I get you some Nori with that?

Dude!!!! I spit Pepsi ALL OVER my monitor when I read that!!!

"Can I get you some Nore with that?"

Damn thats funny! :p :p :p

Am I the only one who thinks it's sad that we have to start rewarding for C's? Or that and punishment for failing is the only way to get a kid to do anything academically?

There was a time I was pretty rebellious, and my parents would be on my back about studying all the time. Just to annoy them, I would do worse than I could have, and eventually I started failing junior high. It wasn't until I realized that I was hurting myself and that I wasn't proving anything except that I could guarantee myself a dead end job. I got straight A's in high school after my parents stopped hounding me and I made the decision myself that having control of my own future was important, and that's the attitude that got me through 2 ivy leagues and medical school. My point is that that motivation can only come internally when a kid is ready to take charge of their own life. I find all these schemes to bribe and extort grades miss the point.

Why hasn't this kid chimed back in yet????? I think everyone has done a great job of getting the point across.

Kid, you sound way too proud of failing. You have got to change your attitude. Everyone I knew who had that attitude are in the same place you are now, at home, wheeling and dealing to get stuff from your parents and I'm 23. Not too long ago and things change fast.

Pandora, that's funny, I was the same way and it was in Jr. High, where I was the most rebellious! What is it about that age...? Man I wouldn't go back to those young years for ANYTHING.

ChickenCannoneer,

Maybe some day you will have the joy of paying "yamaha racer" to mow your lawn and feed your peacocks!

Is it just me or is this comment terribly unconstructive? A couple other comments have been as well, but sorry, this is the one that went a bit too far, imo.

Yamaha Racer, congrats on the lights and tank. Good luck with making it a beautiful reef too. I DO have to agree with everyone else here as well about the grades, but I dont really want to echo them. High school is hard, but failing is almost harder to do as that basically means you didnt do much of anything at all.. I've got a class I really just dont care about - French class. It bores me to death in all honesty, but I still wont let that grade fall below a B but I dont expect an A, which is a low standard for me, but only because I despise that class... I just cant bring myself to study for it for too long. However not trying at all isnt the way to go about it. I'm not your mom or anything, but please just at least try as much as you can to get good grades.

LukFox....If you are going to "Quote" me...then quote the entire post. Do not "edit out the praise to ChickenCannoneer and just leave in the negative comment.

you are right LukFox, I did go a little far with that comment adn it was very unconstructive. The kid does not deserve that sort of lashing. IT is not entirely his fault that. He is a product of envirement. He is not the only one to blame.

Itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s funny how you guys ridicule this kid. Whatââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s even funnier is that half of you canââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t even put a constructive sentence together.

Is it ever possible to just give someone helpful advice on this forum?

Sorry about that Tava, but the rest was irrelevant to my point and getting rid of it didnt seem to change the context (at least how I read it), but yes, I'm sorry if you think it did change the context.

I'm glad to see your comment, and I hope that yamaha racer decides to read this far if he's already read some of the negative comments as unconstructive comments can be, well, destructive :/ .

Yamaha, even if your dad accepts those grades, you deserve better and you still have time to try harder in school.

Ilia,

1. There are a lot of educated people posting on this thread (a lot of them ARE parents). Making the comment that "half of you can't even put a constructive sentence together" is not a valid comment.

2. This is one of the best sites on the internet for reef keeping and ther are a ton of helpful hints made each day by the "more than 100,000 members" on this great site.

3. I personally think that a lot of these comments (INCLUDING MY OWN) should be directed tward this kids parents. That is where the "real problem" is.

Oh Ilia, I see you are also a high school student......

Please go back and read my earlier post. That was my politically correct, squeeky clean reply. My real life reply had a lot or real life words that rhymed with duck, and phrases that sounded like "kicking his bass......"

This boy really needs whopping, a very serious whopping, and non stop whoppings, by his parents, until such time that he gets his act together.

All is all, this thread has been much to kind and gentle. This in an ongoing problem in society. It is HIS fault. It is his PARENTS fault. And sadly, this is what is happpening all across America.

The best thing that could happen to him is to get into trouble with the law, have the judge tell him it's jail time or the military, take your choice, and have the boy choose the Army or Marines and they can break him down and make him a man.

Rant mode off.

To be fair, the OP did not ask for advice.

LukFox,

No worries! :) I too hope this young lad reads this. If we are lucky, maybe some of it will sink in.

CW From the OC,

Maybe us old folks are wrong....Maybe these highschool kids really do know more than us. Maybe we are just not understanding the next generation of leaders and profesionals. If this is what we have to look forward to......then I best go drown myself in my aquarium.

:)

Don't worry about these do-gooders. Just act intelligent and study enough to pass---you may be president of USA one day !!!
I hope your tank does well, and that is all this post should have been debating instead of, "You stupid kid, start studying and be a geek like me so you can have a tank worth bragging about!!!".
LOL, good luck my friend
