From what I have read from his first and only post Yamaha Racer (he may have unsubscribed from this thread already) he is trying to do better in school. If he can do the research and show his father that his tank utilizes less than one halogen bulb then it seems clear that he has the initiative and drive to possibly do better in school.

I also slacked off in high school (I never ever got anything below a C), and wished I had paid more attention to mathematics and science. This hobby alone involves biology, chemistry, and physics - all the stuff that I said was 'absolutely junk - never going to use this crap' when I was as that age.

Like Tava176 said there are many educated and older (i.e. mature) rc members who have posted. I bet you anything that these same people either know or have known someone at some point who has had Yamaha Racer's point of view on priorities of hobby over school (or lack there of). It just makes me just shake my head and wonder how long he is going to be in this hobby as it seems the way it is heading it will be a very short-lived.

coming from someone probably only a couple years older than you(22), Ive weaseled some sweet deals when I shouldnt have, but damn your parents are not doing you any favors here.

get the grades up. your still on easy street.

or get really good at football.

Yamaha, I know many others have already said this, but I myself was a "D" and "F" student in high school.
-except band, only because I could play some serious drums and I held our small band together-

My point, once you graduate school and look back on it all, you will really be ****ed off at the fact you let yourself slide through. High school is probably the easiest thing you will ever do in life. If I could do anything in my life over again, up onto this point, it would be to go back to high school again and do it the right way.

You will have your entire life to ride a dirt bike and play with a fish tank. Study. If anything, at least hold yourself to a "C" average. It isn't difficult. It might seem like a pain in the @$$ to study for a few hours every night for a test or read a book, but it will pay off. Trust me.

Biology, your for sure going to need that with a hobby like this. I managed to pass with a D- in that class. You know what college class I just took, biology 101. Passed it with a 86%
English, if you ever want to be successful in anything, you must be able to talk and write like you have a head on your shoulders. You won't realize it now, but you will need it.
Math, don't even get me started on basic math. Yes, there is a reason for basic algebra and yes, you will use it.
Social Studies, econ, American history...well, now that I'm 24yo and my wife and I want to invest money in the stock market, I am pretty much completely re-learning everything that I was taught in high school that I didn't pay attention to. Social studies, lets say it really sucked when I was told I was going to Haiti and had absolutely no idea where on the globe to even begin to look to know where I was going, not to mention the type of people I would be dealing with.

-end of rant. I just hate seeing people in high school get by with the bare min. Now that I'm a little older and can look back on it all.

Don't worry about these do-gooders. Just act intelligent and study enough to pass---you may be president of USA one day !!!
I hope your tank does well, and that is all this post should have been debating instead of, "You stupid kid, start studying and be a geek like me so you can have a tank worth bragging about!!!".
LOL, good luck my friend

If people who can notice the difference between right and wrong....disciplined and undisciplined....irational thinking and logical thinking are "do-gooders", then I am glad to be one!

P.S. My tank is definately nothing worth bragging about....SHHHH.....Don't tell the other "do-gooders". They might kick me out of the "do-gooders" club.

I hope he unsubscribed himself from this thread for his own sake! Man you guys are mean

This is a forum about reefkeeping - not parenting

Maybe so but it isn't for bragging and being proud of failing. This kid came on here to tell us how horrible of a student he is (we don't care) and how he tricked his Dad into buying him stuff for the tank. Then went on to tell us that if he didn't get his way he'd sell something and buy a motorcycle. In some twisted way he was showing off his privileges. Telling this kid this behavior is okay is irresponsible by anyone who cares to comment on it.

Oh Ilia, I see you are also a high school student......

Please go back and read my earlier post. That was my politically correct, squeeky clean reply. My real life reply had a lot or real life words that rhymed with duck, and phrases that sounded like "kicking his bass......"

This boy really needs whopping, a very serious whopping, and non stop whoppings, by his parents, until such time that he gets his act together.

All is all, this thread has been much to kind and gentle. This in an ongoing problem in society. It is HIS fault. It is his PARENTS fault. And sadly, this is what is happpening all across America.

The best thing that could happen to him is to get into trouble with the law, have the judge tell him it's jail time or the military, take your choice, and have the boy choose the Army or Marines and they can break him down and make him a man.

Rant mode off.

I completely agree with you. However, I feel that with his level of intelligence itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s going to be tough to understand your concern. Bashing away at him will only make him less willing to listen.

Damn i feel bad now. Do you think the father took his computer away too. I feel like i started it too. It just went down hill for the lil guy from there. Maybe the kid gave CW's paper to his dad. Then he got banned. LOL

reading what reefwick said, i see that there is some truth to it, but i see some positive aspects to it.

my academic career has been a breeze. from 8th to 12th grade i never got below a B+, actually for the most part i got A's. I never studied, very rarely participated, only did the homework the same day it was due, etc. for some particular reason i have a nack for facts. as long as i paid some level of attention it was sufficent for me to do well. The same goes with college. if it wasnt for a lack of student activities i could have gone to a better school, but Rutgers is not that bad and right now i have a 3.6 in laboratory research major, still with the same system. but i wouldnt consider myself intelligent. im just good with information. ive never read the classics, and rarely did i seek to improve abstract intelligence. i guess what im saying is that you need a formal education only if you seek to be an economically successful individual, but by no means does it lead to the formation of a truly intellectual being. unfortunately i've noticed over the years that in this country people tend to value what an individual does and not who he or she is.

im assuming a lot but supposing that the father knows him well his ability to use the resources around him to achieve his goal is a highly respectable example of a none academic intelligence that can prove highly rewarding if applied in the right field. whether his information was true or false his understanding of the mindset of the people around him and his ability to be able to decipher it in a way to achieve his goals is an example of an underlying knowledge he possesses that relatively few people have. if i work hard and sacrifice my time and other joys for long stretches of time to get the fish tank, how is that more or less intelligent than his abiltiy to manipulate the playing field to achieve his goal immediately? obviously this is an isolated incident and either him or his father could just be dumb people, but he could very well be leo dicaprio from "catch me if you can" (i hope somebody saw that movie to know what im talking about)!

if this is the type of individual you are, yamaha, apply it the best you can. u only live once, and it is best to do what u want to do rather than what people say u should be doing and/or what makes the most money. even if it is in fast food, or the LFS. by the way these are all honorable positions since they all serve a purpose in society. what one earns in mcdonalds could easily feed a family a four back in my homeland, and even send one or two of them to school

by the way what type of lighting to u have or plan on using? what are your plans for the tank?

alright well since u guys think i have such an easy life and i wipe my [profanity]w/gold playted toilet paper, well i dont. my older brother was and still is a [profanity]up and failed high school. and since he [profanity] his life my dad expects so much of me....i take at least 2 classes for summer of science classes, im in 2 english classes(one normal and one core english for those super nerds), im in bio and chemistry, and calc.math and in apush history class(advanced placment)and u guys think i have every thing served to me on a silver plater,,,no i pay for every thing in my tank and i pay for my bikes...and instead of hanging out w/ my friends on weekend i get to do homework for 6 classes and im only 15. so dont tell me im good for nothing... dont tell me im going to work at mcdonalds...i have plans for my life...i plan on going to the university of the pacific in hawaii and major in marine biology....hell in the next 10 years ill most likely be your boss....i have enough credits for high school that i can graduate but i cant until im 18...so dont say im getting off easy....my dream is to be a marine biologist and thats what im going to do.

how do u feel now

I feel happy you didn't get your computer taking away! It would have been my fault I started this. But on second thought maybe you did get you computer taking away because it is 11:00pm here in cali. Is your dad asleep? Don't you have school tomorrow?

Okay wonderful, but getting F's and D's will put you on a fast track to nowhere. Coming on here flaunting that fact is even more ridiculous. I think you even posting that information was a huge mistake as I'm sure your realizing now. A lot of the McDonalds remarks were jokes (to an extent). I admire your big plans but those grades will not let you achieve them.

Hey just becuase you are in the "hard" classes in HS, (even though there really arent any now that i have taken some college courses) doesnt give you an automatic ride to the college of your choice, if you fail those "hard" classes you will just redo the year in the normal classes. That should look really good on your application to colleges though. I mean, heck, if i was looking over applications to college and i seen someone that failed all the honors classes i would def want to accept them...

Get your grades up now or else your not going to make it in college, IF you ever get there...

*edit- if your grades are that low then good, thats what i would expect you to do on the weekends is stay home and study and do homework to get them grades up. Good Luck with school man

Most of you people act like youv'e never receive a "C" in high school---give me a break.
Tava176?? You are the president of the "do-gooders" club for idiots.

Wow! For a reef related website this has more drama than a saturday night block party in a trailer park. People listen, he initially posted this thread in an attempt to gain praise for what he accomplished, pulling one over on the old man. We were all his age at one time or another and know what being accepted feels like. If you don't agree with his post, don't respond. It is this exact type of thread that caused me to post the article that I posted entitled "We can all learn from this!". If you haven't read it, please do so. Personally, whether or not he passes has no bearing on my life whatsoever. I in no way want him to fail, but it is his choice, just like it was each of ours. Leave the drama for another place and time and get back to reefing. Congradulations on getting your tank and lights YamahaRacer.

well in school ive been doing really bad and have like 2 "f"s and a D, and when he found out about my grades he said he was going to keep the 55g w/ overflows that we picked up last weekend and that he doesnt want me to put the mh in because he says that my tank takes up to much electricity but after some research on electricity of my tank that my tank only tanes up like $20 a month and told him my tank is taking up less power than one 300w halogen light that we have in our house.(we have like 5) and so after showing him this he let my set up the mh that would make my tank like a little less that 2 halogen lights. and since the semester is over and now im only failing one class and he'll know ill do better if i want to play football next year he let me keep the tank and im so excited because if he didnt give me the tank i was going to sell my tank and buy a 02' YZ450f...and even thought i really want the bike im taking the tank and maybe ill get the bike soon.......o ya and after putting the mh in it made my tank so amazing...
thanks for listening

Lol, I have all A s and my dad doesnt let me buy anything for my fishtank...it all goes into the bank

Well I'm surprised by the RC members reactions here, I didn't expect a flame war like this could and would be allowed to go on. Let's chill out people, but Yamaha getting bad grades in hard classes means jack.

Now let's see some pics...

Wrott,

I never got to do anything cool when I was growing up because I came from a poor family. Maybe I miss read his intentions when he posted his original email. maybe I thought he was bragging about pulling a fast one on his old man.

I am still angry that I had it so rough growing up....I guess that kind of overflowed into my posts on this thread. You may be right. I may be the president of the idiots club.

AllenFord_SC,
You are correct as well...this is not the Opera forum. this is a forum about reefkeeping.

Yamaha,

Sorry if I said anything to hurt you. Like Wrott said,....idiots club. Listen kid, pelase, please, please get yourself a tudor. Any college worth spending $$$ to go to will not accept you if you have D's and F's man. Get a tudor and study.

Lets get back to talking about our passion for wanting a little piece of the ocean in our homes. :)

I feel like the other guy was right about you needing a butt whooping. :) What are you looking for? Is it acceptance? Pity? I mean come on, you're 15, you should know how to stand on your own two feet by now. Skating through life by weaseling and whining isn't really an attractive attitude either. Getting C's, D's and F's in all AP & honors classes is not going to impress a college any more than it is people here. I have a friend who is alum at HPU (for bio also), and she did it through getting mostly A's in regular classes. There's no shame in dropping down to nonadvanced classes if you are having trouble, applying yourself, getting help if you need it... it'll look better on any transcript. And don't forget that they put credence on whether or not your attitude shows you have maturity to move on to the next level.

So, drama or not, it hit a nerve with many people here because it showed what's wrong with the educational system in the US today... a lot of reward for mediocrity. Good luck, kid.
