I got to spend a day on the Great Barrier Reef this week with a real underwater photographer and real underwater photography gear.

Here is my blog post: http://everything-everywhere.com/2008/05/05/my-day-as-an-underwater-photographer

Here are some of the photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/garndt/sets/72157604871403939/

I noticed varying levels of water clarity. Some photos were clear, some very blue, and some were brownish. Were these photos taken on more than 1 day or were you out for more than one tide?

If these tides affected the clarity, do you know what tide offered the best water conditions?

- All the photos were taken on the same day. The clarity is probably an issue of depth more than anything else.

- No one was laying on the reef. Health of the coral aside, that would hurt like hell. When taking a photo you remain neutrally buoyant and if necessary, use a hunk of dead coral to steady yourself.

- I don't know why kneeling on sand would be anymore harmful than kneeling on grass. (less so, grass is alive. Sand isn't) I've done lots of dives and have been around enough coral biologists and have never heard of anyone issuing warnings about kneeling on sand.
