My Diy Larvae Snagger

david,

unfortunately i m stuck in the same situation kathy and others are in. i think you have the ideal situation. i looked at the other snaggers made and in my tank i just have very limited space with rock, etc. my tank is only a 30 long, 1 X 1 H/W.

im hoping this snagger will work for temp. so i can gain some experience raising some larvae and dev. a routine than i hope to put in a tile/pot and transfer the eggs that way. im just afraid they might get scared and stop spawning if i introduce something diff in there tank.

thanks for your input regarding the moonlight. the blue was all i had laying around :( this contraption i made was just from random parts, and not ideal. im also not good at diy stuff so im hoping this is somewhat effective.

as far as flow. your insight on there ability to swim is just something i have no clue. so hopefully that regulator i added will give me some control as the process moves along.

im definetly going to be ready with a small bowl just in case.

Honestly in a tank that small (20L) I don't see the need for the snagger at all. Just turn off all the pumps and shine a flashlight at the surface, they will come and you scoop them out. A turkey baster will get the stragglers that wonder about the tank. Having help to hold/ direct the light is nice but you can do it yourself. I have used duct tape to positon the light and keep both hands free. I really think that in your case the snagger is more trouble than it's worth, JMO ;)

Caution, DO NOT be tempted to use the flashlight to check the nest every 5 minutes, you will only delay the hatch. Set the moonlight near the nest and use it to monitor hatching, when it starts to "cloud up" with lavae turn on the flashlight. If you have any cleaner shrimp in there you might remove them for the evening, they are faster than you OR a snagger at catching larvae  In fact remove them permanently, they prey on the nests at night while the parents are less vigilant.

excellant advise david , thank you very much! :)

you bring up all very good points. if i can get away with a snagger even better :)

david, do i shine the flashlight across the surface or straight down at one spot?

Well, I gotta say that the days of waiting up until 2:00 AM for a hatch or spawn are definitely something I'm looking to avoid in the future...i.e. I left my timers on regular time when we fell-back, so they now all go off an hour earlier ;) The snagger is one of those lazy-man's blessings, when they work that is!

Matt

Yes, but don't be tempted to leave the larvae in the snagger all night. With the flow in there, they will all be dead by morning. I leave mine in the snagger until the last few larvae enter, then it goes off and the larvae get transferred to their rearing tank. So it's a late night, maybe 10:30.

With peppermint shrimp, Kirkendoll describes success leaving the snagger on all night, but from what I have heard, it is not a good idea with clownfish.

I've often left them on overnight, with little losses. Mind you the flow is pretty low and the tanks are off. When I'm working, they stay in there until I can get at them which usually means 5pm or later.

so if you guys have the snagger on, do you use an airstone to keep the rest of inhabitants ok?

agree, very interesting dman. i might have to do that also.

dman, do you use the same snagger kathy described also?

I do use an airstone, but it is perhaps not necessary. A couple hours with no pump will not kill stuff. However, if you left it off all night.....I am not sure.

There's generally enough saturated oxygen in a bare breeding tank to keep everyone alive for a couple of days, not recommended, but it's happened to me on more than one occaision.I'm not sure if this LINK will work, but the thread has pics of my snagger. Someone PM me if you need to register or some such nonsense like that to view it.
Also, I don't normally use an airstone either, not normally, never. :D

embryoguy,I have the dream pair of clowns.I can rearange there tank,SWAP ANOMS,SWAP ANOMS to a diferent species,Feed the anom during spawn, and they never stop spawning.Nothing I have done will stop them.I am trying to get the tank set for the long haul, that is the reasion for all the movement. You may have a pair just like mine.......,you never know till you try.Is my impression right that there is a better hatch when the eggs are left in the spawn tank?
