its an old fresh water aquarium i bought from a guy.

OK spazz I finally have a question; After making the cone, how did you flush trim it to the sides? Small laminate router maybe? I have a coupla' big ones that couldn't get anywhere near that.

Went to Pet Smart the other day and this thread kept me from looking at anything except one thing, a large hex aquarium. All I could think is darn that would make a nice skimmer.

LOL

Can't wait to see it with the larger neck. Keep up the great work!

BTW, could you do something for me? Can you setup a video camera and while filming pour that skimmate in again? I'd love to see it shoot out the top like a high school science lab procedure gone bad. Ok enough kidding ..... but it would be cool ...

That skimmer reminds me of those 'shrunken head' indians that you see in old B&W circus photos. The tall big body with a itty-bitty neck and collection cup up top. Lol.

sorry i didnt get back to respond to the questions. i was in kentucky for a few days. im hoping to get in touch with energy tomorrow and see if we can hook up this ugly mother and see what it will do. then i plan to hit the milling machine and make a 6" twist lock for it. that will require alot of refit work to the cup. but will be worth it in the end. i hope. im hoping ot get video of this running and host it somewhere here on the net for you to see. stay tuned. lol

Hey, I was cruising through your thread, but never saw a picture of your needle wheel. Did you post it at all? Just curious.

That is one heck of a skimmer. Hope it works as planned.

no pic of it yet. i dont want a bunch of people building these just to find out they explode or something like that. its better to test them first. then if everything goes right i might post how i built them.

Anything from Sequence yet on the opportunity to test their new needle wheel design ?
the last word i heard from them was that they had a batch of them being made for testing, but they ran short of materials to finnish them up. that was a coupe of weeks ago. we will just have to see what happens.

well the test tank, turned skimmer, was delivered to energys house tonight for testing. we got it all plumbed up and running. it will take a couple of days to get broken in but i feel confident that it will really do his tank a world of good. it might need a little bit of tweaking in the future but we just have to see how things go. unfortunatly i forgot the camera at home(was in a rush to get out the door) so there is no pics for now. but i have to go back this week and add a fitting on it for the wet neck system. im hoping to have some results of how its doing in the next week or so.
i would like to thank energy for allowing me to use his system for testing this new design out. the only change i would like to make is a where the feed water is drawn from. im hoping to add a small box into the sump to collect the incoming water from the tank so it dont mix with the clean water exiting the skimmers. for now he is going to leave his skimmer running so we dont contaminate the system. once the test skimmer is good and broke in im hoping it will shut down the other skimmer. we will just have to see.

Break in is going well and the skimmer is all ready collecting gunk. This is within 3-4 hours of the initial start up. We added a little skimmate from my other skimmer to jump start this one and it hasn't really stopped. The bubble size and density in the chamber is very impressive to say the least. Visually the bubble quantity appears to be more dense in spazz's chamber than my other skimmer which is running 4- sedra's. I'll keep everyone posted as things progress.

Energy, is it this one you are talking about?

the pic if from your 1700 gal stingray post, but I'm not sure if you changed that skimmer in the meantime?

If you or spazz could give us some more details on that actual skimmer, so we can compare it to the new one you are testing now next to it, that would be great.
TIA.

you can see the sink next to the skimmer in that pic. well my skimmer sits right next to the sink. now. that skimmer is still there and running. if my skimmer shuts that skimmer down he will more than likly take it off line for now. i have to go back there and add a fitting on to the test skimmer on friday. i will bring my camera along and get some pics then. along with some of the reef itself.
he has some awesome fish and corals in that reef!

That skimmer is still running. As of now they are running in tandem both operating efficiently and seem to be pulling out equivalent amounts of gunk. This is a visual only comparison. My original skimmer is running wetter than spazz's currently. I will be adjusting spazz's skimmer to pull out an equivalent colored gunk and then could possibly measure the actual quantity of skimmate if that is of interest to anyone. Spazz will be by to take and post pictures.
